Today’s first speaker was Laura Kilty, with Shaklee in Golden, Colorado. Laura called her talk today “Bits and Pieces”.
Two weeks ago Vera Kiphardt (our realtor) talked about lead in homes and she spun that off to discuss lead in supplements and spoke to Shaklee’s commitment to safety. The first step – Shaklee does extensive testing on all the raw ingredients, thru out the manufacturing process and then again on the final product. In one batch of supplements, the final test should lead in the final product, which is weird because the raw ingredients tested lead free. So, the Shaklee science team went to the manufacturing plant and walked thru the entire process. They found that in one area where they were grinding the raw ingredient the plant was using ceramic balls that were weighted with lead. Apparently, the lead was leaching out and into the raw ingredient. The manufacturer swapped out the lead weights and this fixed the issue. The contaminated batch was destroyed. The interesting (and sad) part is that this manufacturer plant processes for many other supplement companies using the same equipment and Shaklee was the first and only company to test their final product and identify the problem. All the other products made from this equipment simply went out the door and sold the consumer. One of the many reasons you need to trust the company you are purchasing products from.
Every year Shaklee has a seasonal protein flavor for the summer and fall. This year they brought back a fan favorite – Peach. It is so popular that it generally sells out in a very short time. This year with the seasonal flavor Shaklee is introducing a new sweetener. Up until now Shaklee offer Stevia sweetened or cane sugar. The problem with this is that there are people with taste buds that can’t handle the Stevia – it leaves a bitter after taste for them. The new sweetener that Shaklee is using is called Reb M. It is a zero-calorie natural sweetener that comes from sugar cane. There is a Reb M sweetener that does comes from Stevia, but Shaklee is not using that version. Reb M is non-GMO and low on the glycemic scale, which means it won’t spike your blood sugar. So, it is well tolerated by those with blood sugar issues. Everyone is different, however, so if you do have blood sugar challenges, please do your testing. Laura has not heard if the plan is to at some point to use Reb M instead of Stevia.
Laura is hoping to hear more about that when she goes to her convention in mid-July – in Vegas… This year’s keynote speaker is Mel Robbins, the author of “The 5 Second Rule”, a book that Lori Bush-Engel shared with us awhile ago. Apparently, this is her last speaking gig before she starts her TV talk show in September. Laura is really looking forward to that!
