Our first speaker today was Dottie Johnson – our massage therapist, her first question to us today was do we have a bucket list. How can we achieve our bucket list – by staying healthy! Everyone should have a health bucket list as well – and that takes positive thoughts, reducing sugar in our diet, staying aligned, using supplements and of ‘course massage. Some of the things that massage does for you are increase blood flow – with more blood flow this increases brain function. Massage increases oxygen and blood flow throughout the body and that creates improvement in every aspect of our lives. Dottie offers traditional massage as well as some techniques that we are not that familiar with like Myofascial and Cranio-sacral.

Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This technique helps many people by treating skeletal muscle immobility and pain by relaxing contracted muscles and improving blood and lymphatic circulation therefore stimulating the stretch reflex in our muscles.

Cranio-sacral is a form of bodywork using gentle touch to manipulate the synarthrodial joints of the cranium. The use of cranial-sacral therapy may also apply light touches to a patient’s spine and pelvis and this manipulation regulates the flow of cerebrospinal fluid.

Dottie treats patients between ages of 20 years to 94 years old. She loves the work that she does and has had many occupations prior to coming to massage therapy as her career. There include art, accounting and computer management as well as an inn keeper at a local bed and breakfast in Denver.
A couple questions that came up were – how do you compete with companies like Massage Envy? Dottie’s answer is that those companies offer a cookie cutter massage – in fact the massage therapists are directed to give a massage a certain way per what package they purchased. When you go to a personal massage therapist like Dottie you are receiving as massage that is directed by what your body is telling the therapist. Another question that was asked is – Are there any new techniques in massage – and the answer is – No, there may be a combination or integration of techniques called by a new name – however the basics of massage therapy remain the same.

The second speaker today was Chala Mohr of Coldwell Banker Real Estate in Denver Colorado. Chala loves working with first time home buyers to find their first home and those who want to move to the mountains. She took her time today to discuss the current market in the Denver Metro area. The Denver area is still fighting the limited homes on the market with only 5300 homes on the market in December with the average day on market being at around 30 days. Our median house listing price is 350,000 and the average sale price is 409,000, however the prices vary throughout the Metro area. Some example that Chala gave us where in the Westwood neighborhood you can buy a shell (older gutted home) for 170,000, in the Barnum neighborhood the average price is 230,000, but in Glendale you can buy a 550-square foot – 1 bed 1 bath home for 125,000. Keep in mind the average asking price per square foot is 195.00 and selling at 189.00 – apparently that is not true in Glendale!
Some things that are changing in the market are that home buyers are becoming more savvy and we are not seeing the crazy multiple offers situation that we did last summer. Another issue that is affecting the real estate sales is the appraisal system that was put in place a few years ago, and is causing a delay in closing from 45 – 60 days. The low inventory as well effects the market and December of 2016 had lower inventory than December 2015 and 2014. March should be the start of another busy real estate season as that is usually when people have gotten over the holiday season and start thinking about buying and selling.
