Our first speaker today was Joan Brown, owner of JB Decorating and the Design Coach in Denver, Colorado. Joan spoke today about decorating don’ts and how to create the perfect space for your home. Joan’s first tip – Don’t put all your furniture against the wall – by moving your furniture into a U shape you will create a conversation setting. If you have a large area you can create a variety of conversation spaces allowing a great entertaining space. Tip number two – Don’t short change your space – when planning out your space create a floor plan and measure. When you measure don’t just measure the space measure your furniture, doorways and stairwells, this will allow you to learn what pieces will fit into the space as well as getting the furniture into the space. Tip number three – Don’t jump the (Paint) gun – with this tip keep in mind that you want to have picked out your furniture and accessories before choosing a paint color that will complement the other elements in the room. Tip number four – Don’t omit the shiny stuff – this is a little thing that can make a big difference. By introducing mirrors or metal accessories to a space you will bounce light throughout the space. Also remember to place mirrors where they reflect something pleasant – not just another wall. Joan’s tip number five – Don’t make impulse purchases – just because an item is on sale or strikes your fancy doesn’t make it a good buy. Have a plan and stick to it! Tip number six – Don’t be satisfied with an on/off switch – creating a lighting plan you can set any mood. Layer your lighting, by using shades and dimmer switches you can change the mood at a moment’s notice. Tip number seven – Don’t play the match game – if you use the same tone or accent pieces throughout the space it will lack a focal point and appear flat. By mixing colors, patterns and textures you will create a space that has visual interest. When you follow these tips you can create a space that is all yours and visually interesting. If you have no idea where to start give Joan Brown at JB Decorating a call, she can help you create a space that works with your life.
