Todays’ speaker was Ann Allen of Home Instead Senior Care in Arvada, Colorado. Ann talked today about Alzheimer’s disease and other mental issues in the aging. Alzheimer’s is an incurable that reportedly affects nearly half of seniors older than 85. It is a very difficult disease to deal with not only for the affected but as well the family caregivers. Home Instead has a program that can help called Alzheimer’s Disease or Other Dementias CARE – Changing Aging Through Research and Education. This training program helps to remove some of the dread associated with these diseases by offering family caregivers the support they so badly need. Through five, 15 minute interactive classes, family members are taught how to immerse themselves in the mindset of their loved one to help manage behavioral symptoms that are frequently associated with the disease, such as belligerence and anger. The dementia curriculum or CARE – Changing Aging Through Research and Education has been reviewed by the Alzheimer’s Association and meets the Alzheimer’s Association Dementia Care Practice Recommendations in the following topics per a report issued last year.
