Our first speaker today was Cindy Dudden of Gracie & Dudden PC in Arvada, CO, a full service CPA firm. Today Cindy used her time to explain how the new tax laws for 2013 were going to affect everyone and how without raising the tax rate the new rules were actually raising taxes. First of all the marriage penalty is back, so couples in which spouses have similar incomes and file jointly will be paying more in taxes once again. This year with changes to the Net Investment Income tax includes many passive incomes that were not included in prior years. Passive incomes are things like interest accrued from your bank, annuities, dividends and royalties. For higher income tax payers – the claim that the tax rate is only going up 4.6% is not the truth. By phasing out the itemized deductions and adding the Net Investment Income Tax the true tax rate is actually 49.59%. The other tax item that Cindy wanted to cover with use was the excise tax put in place for failing to carry health insurance that will go into effect in 2014. In 2014 the minimum tax will be 95.00 per uninsured adult and 47.50 per uninsured person under the age of 18 or 1% of the taxpayer’s household income in excess of the 1040 filing threshold. This will go up in 2015 to 325.00 per uninsured adult and 162.50 per uninsured person under the age of 18 or 2% of the taxpayer’s household income in excess of the 1040 filing threshold. After 2015 the penalty will go up to 325.00 per uninsured adult and 347.50 per uninsured person under the age of 18 and will max out at 2085.00 or 2.5% of the taxpayer’s household income in excess of the 1040 filing threshold. Keep in mind that there are several exemption such as being incarcerated, a member of an Indian Tribe, a member of certain religious sects and if the premium exceed 8% of the household income. If you are looking for a CPA that can walk you through the new IRS regulations, give Cindy Dudden at Gracie & Dudden PC a call.
