Today’s first speaker was Dr. Erin Foley Kruse of Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center in Golden, Colorado. Dr. Erin Foley Kruse talked to us today about “What Every Woman Needs to Know About Menopause and Peri-menopause.”. Erin discussed how Peri menopausal symptoms can start in your 30’s, and starts with fluctuations in your hormone levels.  The hormonal level in a woman starts changing in you 30’s and with the Peri menopause symptoms of PMS, bloating, cramping, hot flashes –  can be harder to deal with than actual menopause – and can last for up to ten years. Menopause generally starts in the 40’s and 50’s for most women and the onset  of of decreasing estrogen where your periods will become irregular and eventually stop. Women’s estrogen levels will drop about 40% and 60% as they go through menopause and this will increase the experiences of hot flashes. Also through the transition into menopause your progesterone will drop to zero and create a large hormone imbalance. Common menopausal symptoms are hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings, irritability, depression and anxiety, difficulty in thinking, decreased sex drive, fat and weight gain, vaginal dryness and osteoporosis.  These changes are brought on by the hormonal fluctuations and changes going on in your body. Other things that can complicate menopause are adrenal fatigue – the constant stress on your body causes your adrenal glands to go into fight or flight all the time and can cause a battery drain on your system making you feel tired all the time. You can add to that by poor diet and lifestyle choices – by maintaining a healthier diet and taking supplements to support your hormonal balance will make your life change go easier for you and those around you. Another thing to keep in mind is the changes in your body as you age can also be low thyroid or hyperthyroidism. Which is very common and under diagnosed in many women, but can cause hair loss, feeling cold, fatigue and weight gain. When checking your thyroid you should always take more than one test and stay away from the synthetic hormones as they may effect your health in the future – find a more natural to deal with it. Acupuncture can help by building up your internal energy and help out with adrenal stress.  What to do as a woman entering into the mine field of peri menopause and menopause? Number one find the right doctor for you – this is the key element finding a doctor, chiropractor, naturopath that will work with you in a manner that will work with you and deal with your “change” in a manner that you expect. If symptoms are mild to moderate you can usually use natural treatment of diet, exercise, natural progesterone cream, acupuncture and supplements. If you have moderate to severe – have a blood and saliva test done to evaluate your hormone level, including your adrenal and thyroid. Bio-identical hormones can be used to alleviate symptoms and bring you body back into balance, these are made from cow and pig hormones rather than the synthetic hormones – which can increase your risk of heart attacks, stroke and breast cancer. Other things that can help any women going through menopause is your diet – eliminate sugars and processed foods, cut back on starches and grains, eat protein through out the day, eat fruits and vegetables and fruits, include water in your daily diet, limit alcohol, and avoid soy – this can disrupt thyroid metabolism, try replacing soy with whey protein. Exercise is very important at this time in your life – include both weight bearing exercises, yoga and Pilate’s are all good outlets to reduce stress, increase bone density and protect your heart.  Some supplements and herbs that can help are Natural Progesterone cream which helps bring up the progesterone levels so your body does not go into a estrogen dominant state – it can also alleviate PMS and menopausal symptoms, taking magnesium helps with sleeping, fish oil will help to reduce inflammation and pain, Black  Cohosh will help with hot flashes for some women, and St. John’s Wort and Vitamin D will help with mild depression (but don’t take with prescription antidepressants). Dr. Erin Foley Kruse has many options for those going through menopause or many of the issues that women deal with – through acupuncture and chiropractic medicine. Give her a call for help with any questions in dealing with your women’s health issues.

Ruthie Williams of Mary Kay Cosmetics in Golden, Colorado was our second speaker today. Ruthie spoke to us today about a couple new items that Mary Kay is offering this spring. The first item  is the new Pedicure Kit – this kit includes – the Relaxing Foot Soak, just add warm water and soak to sooth your aching feet, a Foot File and Brush, use this to scrub and exfoliate your feet and the Soothing Foot Balm, massage this in for intense moisturizing. Ruthie’s second new item was the Limited Edition “Beauty that Counts” Lipsticks in the colors of Confidence, a deep rich berry color, Inspiration, which is a soft, light pink, and Compassion, a hot, vibrant fuchsia, each color is infused with vitamin E and C and has a light vanilla flavor. Just as last year one dollar of each sale will go to support the “pink changing lives” campaign to help cancer patients and domestic violence victims. Ruthie reminded us about the Mary Kay Night Emollient Creme, this was actually the very first item sold by Mary Kay. The formula was bought from a leather tanner – who designed it to make his leather soft and supple, he found that when working with the tanning chemicals, the creme kept his hands soft. It works well for just about any area you need extra moisture – me, I use it on my feet! Ruthie also reminded us with spring and summer upon us and in Colorado the sun is out most days, as we age, we need to keep in mind that sun damage will cause age spots. Sunscreen is very important and Mary Kay Even Complexion Sunscreen will not only help prevent further sun damage but will also help in keeping age spots from coming to the surface of your skin. If you need any help with your skin just remember that Ruthie can do everything from a wedding day make over to a skin conditioning program designed just for you!
