Our first speaker today was Laura Kilty of Shaklee in Golden, Colorado. Laura spoke to us today after just returning from the Shaklee Global Convention. There were over 5000 people in attendance and 1000 medical professionals attended the Medical Professionals Reception. This really says a lot about the Shaklee products to have that many medical professionals in attendance. The real excitement were the two speakers this year one was Mark Kelly, the astronaut that piloted the last shuttle fight with the Endeavor this summer, they showed video from the flight and as well as Mark Kelly taking his Shaklee Vitalizer vitamins in space. The other speaker that they had this year was Aron Ralston, the mountain climber who had to cut off his arm to save his life and is the author of “127 Hours”, the story of his struggle to survive. This year Shaklee introduced no new products but updated a few of their products.

Vitalizer– All of the Vitalizer products now have a triple berry extract with black and red raspberry and blackberries-the equivalent of one cup. The berries add an increased antioxidant protection, 5 times more that the “old” Vitalizer. This increases the immune system, is good for your vision and will decrease your risk of heart attack and cancers. This new formula took Shaklee 2 years to perfect.

Vitalizer for Men– now has extra lycopene and magnesium for prostate health.

Vitalizer for Women – now includes cranberry extract, works as an effective antibiotic in the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections.

Vitalizer Gold– for those over 50 – now includes 30 mg of CoQ10. This is the same as the Shaklee CoQHeart which is CoQ10 & resveratrol. The price was only increased by 5.00.

Vivix – has a new box and they have developed a drip proof design.

They introduced two new membership programs – the first is with the purchase of Vitalizer products you can get free membership. The second is the new Membership Referral Program – this program is only available with online, with a quick and easy link in your member center. There will be a box where you can share the link via Facebook, Twitter or email with friends. You tell them how much you love the Shaklee products and how you think it would benefit their lives. When they order through this link with just a 25.00 order, you get a 25.00 credit towards your Shaklee purchases. You can you up to 250.00 of credits a month. Your friend does not have to join and will receive the products at a 15% discount.

Did you know that proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle can prevent many major diseases? Or that there has been up to a 38% decline in the nutrient content of crops in the last 50 years according to a report by the USDA? In the last 30 years there has been an increase in fast food sales of 2000%? Your body can not manufacture all of the nutrients it needs on its own and we now are not getting it from the foods we eat… how are you making sure that your body is getting the nutrients it needs to remain healthy? 90% of Americans fall short in getting essential nutrients in our diets. We think nothing of spending 4-5 dollars on Starbucks each day. Yes, it’s yummy but, does it build your health? Laura is not saying give up your Starbucks… that’s no fun. But you do have a choice. Vitalizer is just 2.64 a day, energy and vitality now – building a healthier body for the future. In a landmark study the folks that had been taking Shaklee long term were averaging less that one prescription. They had less occurrences of diabetes, heart disease and stroke versus those that took brand x or nothing. Consider the future costs of those illness and prescriptions to maintain your body. Shaklee is the only company in the world that has proof of it’s long term effectiveness. If you want to start on a healthier track in your life give Laura Kilty of Shaklee a call and she can get you started!

Today our second speaker was Helen Masterson of Masterson & Friends Communications in Arvada, Colorado. Helen wanted to discuss the Top Ten Business Tips that she has learned throughout the years. . .

1. Answer the telephone with a smile. (Even if it rings in the middle of the night – wake up and answer with a cheery hello. Especially if you are a personal information officer like me and the media is calling). When answering and the client is looking for someone else in your office ~ Never say, “They’re not in yet” or “they have left for the day” or, horrors, “they are not back from lunch yet.” Always say, “They are in a meeting, may I help you or take a message.”

2. Don’t throw anything away, especially little slips of paper with important notes. File all notes in a “Hold/Toss file. Toss only after there is no chance someone will question why you wrote something or did a certain business transaction.

3. Write everything down. Write “Memo to the Files” to document an action. If you want to copyright something, an idea or product and don’t have the time to flush out all the details, write the idea down on a piece of paper, put the paper in an envelope addressed to you and mail it. When you receive it in the mail, don’t open it, of course, but put it sealed in a file. Just in case.

4. Walk with purpose. Always act like you know exactly where you are going – even if you don’t. Out-of-town tip: Carry the local newspaper with you (never USA Today. That is a dead ringer you are from out of town.) If you have down time, just like a local, read the paper.

5. Some people just won’t buy your product or service. It is no disgrace to move on to someone or something else. If you plan a special event and it isn’t working, pull the plug. Move on. Some mountains just can’t be moved.

6. Always be pleasant and fair to everyone in the office. You never know who will end up as president of the company.

7. If you can, volunteer your time out of your profession or comfort zone. You will probably meet remarkable people and learn something completely new.

8. Don’t hesitate to ask advice from your peers. Professional people see helping other professionals as a sign of good teamwork.

9. Watch holidays and special “days”. Before you plan anything involving other people, check the calendar first. The end of Daylight Saving (no “s”) Time is especially a problem for an evening event. Suddenly it gets dark at 4:30 instead of 5:30. People get moody and want to go home instead of to your event.

10. Listen. Listen and evaluate before you come to any conclusion.

If you are looking for a writer to create a new brochure or a news release - Helen Masterson will craft the words to make you sound your best!

Today our first speaker was Edna Miklos, owner of The Hair Place in Golden, Colorado. Edna has owned The Hair place for 25+ years now and has 5 stylists that are able to take care of any of your hair care needs along with a full line of hair care products to bring out your hair’s full potential. At The Hair Place, the stylists go through continuing education throughout the year to stay abreast of the current styles and trends. Today Edna wanted to talk to us about our styling tools – blow dryers, curling irons, brushes and the basic uses of them to protect your hair. When it comes to our blow dryers, blow dryers come in a variety of several watts and power, they have a high and low air flow, although the air has one heat setting. If you have heavy thick hair you will need to purchase a dryer that has both of these settings. Remember that before blow drying your hair always towel dry prior but blot don’t rub your hair, then apply the product you most commonly use, ie. volumizer, mousse, straighten balm or thermal protectant. If you straightening your hair the brush you use is very important, using a paddle (flat) brush from the root and pull down straight along the side of your head – with the dryer nozzle right in line with the brush. When trying to create volume and curl use a round brush – preferably with a metal base, the metal base adds heat. You want to start close to the head and pull out and away from the head, the hair will tangle when wet and release as it dries. When drying out your hair make sure to section off your hair – sides, back and top. Drying section by section gives you better control and also allows you to get the brush close to the scalp for better lift. When directing the end of the dryer on the brush and hair, drying with a downward motion. This will help smooth out the cuticle layer of the hair for more shine. Once your hair is dry you can move to curling or straightening. Curling irons come in a variety of different sizes, from ½ to 3 inches, a professional iron can be as large as 4”. They will usually come with a high and low setting, although a professional quality will have settings from 1 to 10. Edna likes these the best because you can adjust the heat for each hair type. When curling your own hair at home remember to turn your iron down to low before using on your hair – this will prevent damaging the cuticle. Also when curling or straightening your hair protect your hair with a thermal protectant, texturizing cream or spray designed to get the best curl without burning the hair such as Redkin Spray Starch or Hot Sets. Once again when curling or straightening, section off your hair – remember that the size of your iron should match the size of each section (ie. ½ iron should be ½ sections). Wrap the hair starting at the scalp around the iron and don’t close the iron all the way, hold it for 5 sec. If you are using the right products you won’t hold the iron there for long. Curl each of these sections in a different direction so you won’t get a uniform look then separate the curls using a shine product like Redkin’s Vinyl Glam ot Tri’s Bright Lites. When using a straight iron start at the scalp and direct the hair straight down, this will smooth the hair for a bone straight look. Some straight irons have a wave attachment that will put a wave or crimp into the hair. This look can take a lot of time to get right and takes a lot of time. The final thing that Edna wanted to mention was your brushes – whether you use a round, flat, boar bristle or plastic – the type of brush depends on the look you are trying to achieve – flat for straight and round for volume. At The Hair Place they can help you with any type of styling or straightening and help you keep that style! Remember your hair is your most important accessory!

Our second speaker today was Maki DeLaet of EduCyber in Lakewood, Colorado. Maki’s talk today was on the 5 Things to Measure in an Internet Marketing Plan.

Most people measure things like “Likes” or “Followers”. That’s not bad but Internet Marketing is more than a popularity contest.

1. Number of Interactions on Facebook – shows they’re engaged. This can be through wall postings and likes to various comments and postings. Such as a Sushi restaurant that posts a monthly special on their Facebook wall and customers come and comment on the special.

2. Number of click-thru’s – from Facebook or Twitter or LinkedIn back to your site. This way you can track were the people are coming from.

3. Increase in number of people who attend an event or call after/during a campaign.

4. Number of hits on a landing page on your site from a campaign. Seminars that are linked from Facebook or Twitter to track where the customers are coming from.

5. Increase in customers as a direct result of a campaign. Finding out where they heard about your campaign or seminar.

This isn’t a popularity contest, it’s business. It’s important to measure things that impact your bottom line.

Our next seminar is on Tuesday, March 15 from 7:30 to 9am titled “How to Build an Internet Marketing Plan” In this 90 minute seminar Brian will walk you through the steps required to put your plan together. From setting your goals to implementing them on Facebook, you’ll walk away with a document you can use for your business. Register online at www.educyber.com

This week we had Dr. Erin Foley-Kruse of Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center in Golden as our first speaker. Erin talked about the acupuncture services that she offers for her patients. Dr. Erin Foley-Kruse has been in practice for 22 years – spending 12 years of that time in Golden, Colorado. Her schooling in acupuncture includes a 3 year course of 500 hours of training followed by a 3 month internship and is NCAAOM certified, one a few here in Colorado. Acupuncture has been around for between 3000-5000 years in Chinese medicine, originally the needles were actually made of bone and they trained students on energy sensitive people. Acupuncture is the the use of the body meridians that are found throughout the body, releasing endorphins that relax the muscle and relieve pain. There are 14 meridian lines that run through the human body, each different meridian line helps or effects parts of the body, an example of this is working with the liver meridian can help with migraine headaches. The various meridians throughout the body can help with a variety of injuries and other problems, from mild traumatic brain injury – like what you would get from whiplash in a car accident or beginning stages of carpel tunnel syndrome. Dr Erin Foley Kruse recommends 6 sessions, beginning with a traditional Chinese diagnosis which takes about an hour and a half and will have several points of evaluation. This gives her a starting point to design a course of treatment and which meridians need to be worked on to better your health. So if you are thinking about working with an acupuncturist or a chiropractor your first call should be to Dr. Erin Foley Kruse at Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic and Acupuncture Center.

Our second speaker was Mary Walewski, standing in for Maki Delaet, of Educyber, your technology parter. Mary started her talk with a few fact or crap questions about social media, questions like does Dick Cheney have more Twitter followers than Ashton Kutcher – which is crap, or are the more employees on Linkdin than managers – crap, how about there are more people under 25 than those over 25 on Facebook – that is crap too. The opportunities of the new world of social network marketing have become things that we as business owners are looking into. Businesses are using Twitter to drive people to their business at just the right moment – such as a bakery tweeting that the bread is fresh out of the oven or a barbeque shop tweeting were their truck will be and followers show up to buy barbeque. When posting on Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter be yourself and don’t sell, just let the people see you as you are, the referrals will come in from second and third hand referrals. Such examples of this are Stephanie Meyer of the Twilight series – she started with a MySpace page and her blog, as people read it they created forums and fan pages that eventually got her a three book deal. Another example is the basis of Julie & Julia, this also came from a blog, people reading the blog started to send emails for more information – then CBS Morning News set up an interview and now she has a second book in the works. So using a blog to increase your sales with tips of your trade or posting ideas on your Facebook page is something that most businesses need to look into. There is also a business section on Facebook, although you have to personal to set one up. Keep it simple for both business and personal – and don’t post anything on your Facebook or Linkedin that you wouldn’t want your mom to see.
