Today’s first speaker was Helen Masterson of Masterson & Friends in Arvada, CO. Helen wanted to discuss Lessons from Santa Claus now that we have passed the holiday season.
Make a list, and check it twice – Check your customer list. Is it up-to-date? Identify customers and what they buy. Profile them in detail. What’s important to them? Break it down by generations and target audiences. It’s a tedious task but it will pay off in the future.
Make a list of 10 of your products or services that you will promote over the next year. Why 10? If you make a list of just one or two, you will certainly never get to three, four, five, six, etc. If the man in the red suit can do it, so can you.
Plan, prepare – and deliver. Santa gears up months in advance for his gift-giving. You should outline a year-long marketing plan. What are you going to promote now, in January. . . in February, March and so on.
Prepare by making sure your website is up-to-date. Next – determine how you are going to deliver your information: e-newsletter, Facebook, twitter, even direct mail. (If Goggle uses direct mail, so can you.)
In marketing there is the 45 day paper rule. Make contact with your customers at least every 45 days. Or they ask: Are you still in business?
What you use is determined by your customer base. Are they following you on Twitter, Facebook or your blog? Still the best way to deliver is face to face by getting out and going to Business after Hours or Business Expo’s and meet people. Schedule it out. Plan on it. Make sure you have something to hand-out! This doesn’t have to be fancy, just something to remember you by.
Ho Ho Ho. Update or reinvent. Remember, Santa didn’t start off with Rudolph.
Do you have a product or service that you can reinvent or re-name? Like with Joan and The Design Coach – a service she already offered but now has given it a name; Suzanne coming up with Desktop Catering for those that can’t leave their desk. A word about naming – since the late 90s and the surge in tech products, we have had a spat of non-names or made-up-names for companies. This violates the first rule of business: your name should never have to be explained. The Hair Place, Food for Thought, but Dixon Paper to Xpedex??? The closing of their Boulder store did the strange new name have anything to do with that?
Show You Care – Santa is associated with gifts and children. Show you care by doing something special. Offer special Flag Day promotion like a flag disposal day, or a shred-a-thon after tax season, etc.
Marketing is not rocket science. It is a mind-set.
You are either going to have a good year or a so-so-year. What will you find under the tree next Christmas? A profit-making year or a lump of coal?

Our second speaker was Laura Kilty of Shaklee in Golden, CO. Laura took her time today to discuss why we need to supplement our diets. She shared with us some startling health statistics since 1999:
* heart disease is up 9.3%
* cancer is up 19.6%
* diabetes is up 34.5%
Research is saying that these diseases are 60-90% preventable, but with our food declining in natural nutrients and fast food sales are up 2000%, roughly 2% of Americans get the recommended daily fruits and fiber.
Now we are seeing many children developing adult diseases:
* 70% have elevated cholesterol
* 60% are overweight, which then feeds into our adult obesity problems
* an increase of 33% of boys and 147% of girls with type 2 diabetes – this used to be known as adult onset diabetes
* 25% are on prescription medication with 7% being on 2 or more
* in 1996 1 million children were diagnosed with ADHD in 2009 that number jumped to 5.3 million
This may be the first generation in the history of mankind to have a shorter lifespan that their parents. It is a lifestyle choice – what you ARE eating but also what you ARE NOT eating.
We know that supplementation is no longer an option. So what supplement do you choose? Let’s take a look at one of the top selling multi-vitamin ingredients:
* Calcium carbonate, Magnesium oxide, Potassium chloride, Ascorbic acid (vitamin c), Dibasic calcium phosphate, Microcrystalline cellulose, dl-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate (Vit E), Pregelatinized Corn Starch, Contains < 2% of: Acacia, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Beta-Carotene, BHT, Biotin, Boric Acid, Calcium Pantothenate, Calcium Stearate, Cholecalciferol (vitamin d3), Chromium Picolinate, Citric Acid, Corn Starch, Crospovidone, Cupric Sulfate, Cyanocobalamin (vitamin b12), FD &C Red No. 40 Aluminum Lake, FD & C Yellow No. 6 Aluminum Lake, Ferrous Fumarate, Folic Acid, Gelatin, Hydrogenated Palm Oil, Hypromellose, Lecithin, Lycopene, Magnesium Stearate, Manganese Sulfate, Medium Chain Triglyerides, Modified Food Starch, Niacinamide, Nickelous Sulfate, Phytonadione (vitamin k), Polyethylene Glycol, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Potassium Iodide, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (vitamin b6), Riboflavin (vitamin b2), Silicon Dioxide, Sodium Ascorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Metavanadate, Sodium Molybdate, Sodium Selenate, Sorbic Acid, Stannous Chloride, Sucrose, Talc, Thiamine, Mononitrate (vitamin b1), Titanium Dioxide, Tocopherols, Vitamin A Acetate (vitamin a), Zinc Oxide. May also contain <2%: Maltodextrin, Sodium Aluminosilicate, Sunflower Oil, Tribasic Calcium Phosphate. Contains: Soy. The bolded item are good for you or things your body needs the items bolded in red are fillers and can be bad for you – however the polyethylene glycol really surprised me.
Laura also wanted to let us know the things that we need to look for in our supplements like Biotin. This is an essential B vitamin and very expensive – most companies will scrimp and only give you 10% of the expensive one and more of the less expensive B vitamins. Also look at the vitamin E – you want d alpha not dl alpha – which is synthetic.
So where do you start… Shaklee’s Vitalizer is the best if you can and are willing, if not, give the Vita-Lea Gold for those over 50. Add a Shaklee Cinch Protein Shake and a Meal in a Bar to help optimize your health.
Laura wanted to cover the Shaklee Cinch products, because in this time of new year’s resolutions the Shaklee Cinch program has added Leucine to the shakes, snack bars and meal bars, that will allow your body to hold on to precious muscle while you are dieting. When you lose muscle during a typical diet – your metabolism goes in the tank. So when you go off that typical diet you will need to eat less calories than before you started or you will gain the fat back.
The Cinch program is also a great breakfast or meal on the go for busy people… even if you are not looking to lose weight – as we age we lose muscle, drinking a Cinch shake can keep you keep that muscle. There are so many reasons to drink the right protein shake everyday – just make sure that you are choosing the right one.
For those of you that know someone who is looking to get to a healthy weight – in a healthy way – and have it be the last time they have to lose weight on their New Year’s Resolution list, tell them about Cinch. Right now Shaklee has a special that when you buy 3 months of the Cinch Transformation Pack and receive the 4th month free – a savings of 300.00. Keep Laura Kilty and Shaklee in mind when looking into supplements or weight loss she can evaluate your current program and design one that will work with you lifestyle and budget.

Our first speaker today was Laura Kilty of Shaklee in Golden, Colorado. Laura spoke to us today after just returning from the Shaklee Global Convention. There were over 5000 people in attendance and 1000 medical professionals attended the Medical Professionals Reception. This really says a lot about the Shaklee products to have that many medical professionals in attendance. The real excitement were the two speakers this year one was Mark Kelly, the astronaut that piloted the last shuttle fight with the Endeavor this summer, they showed video from the flight and as well as Mark Kelly taking his Shaklee Vitalizer vitamins in space. The other speaker that they had this year was Aron Ralston, the mountain climber who had to cut off his arm to save his life and is the author of “127 Hours”, the story of his struggle to survive. This year Shaklee introduced no new products but updated a few of their products.

Vitalizer– All of the Vitalizer products now have a triple berry extract with black and red raspberry and blackberries-the equivalent of one cup. The berries add an increased antioxidant protection, 5 times more that the “old” Vitalizer. This increases the immune system, is good for your vision and will decrease your risk of heart attack and cancers. This new formula took Shaklee 2 years to perfect.

Vitalizer for Men– now has extra lycopene and magnesium for prostate health.

Vitalizer for Women – now includes cranberry extract, works as an effective antibiotic in the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections.

Vitalizer Gold– for those over 50 – now includes 30 mg of CoQ10. This is the same as the Shaklee CoQHeart which is CoQ10 & resveratrol. The price was only increased by 5.00.

Vivix – has a new box and they have developed a drip proof design.

They introduced two new membership programs – the first is with the purchase of Vitalizer products you can get free membership. The second is the new Membership Referral Program – this program is only available with online, with a quick and easy link in your member center. There will be a box where you can share the link via Facebook, Twitter or email with friends. You tell them how much you love the Shaklee products and how you think it would benefit their lives. When they order through this link with just a 25.00 order, you get a 25.00 credit towards your Shaklee purchases. You can you up to 250.00 of credits a month. Your friend does not have to join and will receive the products at a 15% discount.

Did you know that proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle can prevent many major diseases? Or that there has been up to a 38% decline in the nutrient content of crops in the last 50 years according to a report by the USDA? In the last 30 years there has been an increase in fast food sales of 2000%? Your body can not manufacture all of the nutrients it needs on its own and we now are not getting it from the foods we eat… how are you making sure that your body is getting the nutrients it needs to remain healthy? 90% of Americans fall short in getting essential nutrients in our diets. We think nothing of spending 4-5 dollars on Starbucks each day. Yes, it’s yummy but, does it build your health? Laura is not saying give up your Starbucks… that’s no fun. But you do have a choice. Vitalizer is just 2.64 a day, energy and vitality now – building a healthier body for the future. In a landmark study the folks that had been taking Shaklee long term were averaging less that one prescription. They had less occurrences of diabetes, heart disease and stroke versus those that took brand x or nothing. Consider the future costs of those illness and prescriptions to maintain your body. Shaklee is the only company in the world that has proof of it’s long term effectiveness. If you want to start on a healthier track in your life give Laura Kilty of Shaklee a call and she can get you started!

Today our second speaker was Helen Masterson of Masterson & Friends Communications in Arvada, Colorado. Helen wanted to discuss the Top Ten Business Tips that she has learned throughout the years. . .

1. Answer the telephone with a smile. (Even if it rings in the middle of the night – wake up and answer with a cheery hello. Especially if you are a personal information officer like me and the media is calling). When answering and the client is looking for someone else in your office ~ Never say, “They’re not in yet” or “they have left for the day” or, horrors, “they are not back from lunch yet.” Always say, “They are in a meeting, may I help you or take a message.”

2. Don’t throw anything away, especially little slips of paper with important notes. File all notes in a “Hold/Toss file. Toss only after there is no chance someone will question why you wrote something or did a certain business transaction.

3. Write everything down. Write “Memo to the Files” to document an action. If you want to copyright something, an idea or product and don’t have the time to flush out all the details, write the idea down on a piece of paper, put the paper in an envelope addressed to you and mail it. When you receive it in the mail, don’t open it, of course, but put it sealed in a file. Just in case.

4. Walk with purpose. Always act like you know exactly where you are going – even if you don’t. Out-of-town tip: Carry the local newspaper with you (never USA Today. That is a dead ringer you are from out of town.) If you have down time, just like a local, read the paper.

5. Some people just won’t buy your product or service.It is no disgrace to move on to someone or something else. If you plan a special event and it isn’t working, pull the plug. Move on. Some mountains just can’t be moved.

6. Always be pleasant and fair to everyone in the office. You never know who will end up as president of the company.

7. If you can, volunteer your time out of your profession or comfort zone. You will probably meet remarkable people and learn something completely new.

8. Don’t hesitate to ask advice from your peers. Professional people see helping other professionals as a sign of good teamwork.

9. Watch holidays and special “days”. Before you plan anything involving other people, check the calendar first. The end of Daylight Saving (no “s”) Time is especially a problem for an evening event. Suddenly it gets dark at 4:30 instead of 5:30. People get moody and want to go home instead of to your event.

10. Listen. Listen and evaluate before you come to any conclusion.

If you are looking for a writer to create a new brochure or a news release - Helen Masterson will craft the words to make you sound your best!

Helen Masterson * Masterson & Friends Communication * 303.467.9680 * Helenguestguidepublicationscom

Our first speaker today was Laura Kilty of Shaklee in Golden, Colorado. Laura’s talk today was all about Earth Day. Get Clean for Earth Day, which will be on April 22nd. Shaklee sports one of the first official Earth Day products with their Basic H. In our world today many people’s first reason for switching over to green products is the environment – with Laura it was an entirely different reason, nothing less than the health of her family. The fact that her choice to switch helps the environment as well is a bonus. In all of our everyday cleaning products there are many bad chemicals that we assume are safe because they are they grocery shelf. This is not true many of these chemicals can not only cause allergic reactions, such as asthma or cause lifelong effects.

Shaklee’s Basic H is your all purpose concentrate, mixed in different strengths is can clean your windows, be an all purpose cleaner or a degreaser. Laura went on to tell us other fun ways to use the Basic H.

Fruit and veggie wash – use 1/8 tsp of Basic H to 16 oz. of water. The fruit and veggie wash in your local grocery store runs for a small bottle 4.69-6.99 depending on the brand. Wash and rinse for pennies with the Basic H.

2. Great for RV or Camping – when cooking on a camp fire, coat the bottom of your pans with straight Basic H and the soot will wipe right off!

3. Wiping the dust of your indoor houseplants – the mix would be the same as the fruit or veggie wash.

4. Use the Basic H as an invisible glove before taking on dirty jobs. By simply rub some on your hands and let dry, then when you are finished with the dirty work just rinse your hands off.

Another Shaklee product is the Basic G – Shaklee’s germicide – the disinfectant that is safe your home. With just ½ tsp of Basic G in 16 oz. of water at a cost of about .27 cents, this is for non-porous surfaces. The trick is to let it sit for 10 minutes to assure to effectiveness and in the kitchen wipe off with water.
Our second speaker today was Dorothy Parrott of Behavioral Vision Care in Lakewood, Colorado. Dorothy wanted to let the new members in our group know how she ended up working in the behavioral optometry field. Dorothy was born in Fall City, NE, where her father had built a successful optometry business. Her mother’s parent came from central Nebraska of German descent and had 10 children – fun fact about her grandparents is that her grandmother was 5 ft. tall and her grandfather was 6 ft tall. Dorothy worked in her father’s office while she was growing up and learned about behavioral vision during this time in her life. Her father wanted her to be a concert pianist but when she went off to college Dorothy decided to major in dance. Soon after arriving in college, at the University of Wisconsin, she discovered that many of her friends and fellow students had a wide variety of vision issues. This is when she decided to become an optometrist. After college she married her first husband a dentist and adopted his daughter Juli, who is married and live in Arvada, she soon became pregnant with Douglas, who now lives in Maine with his wife and her youngest Stephen, who currently works with the ACLU. The marriage eventually ended and she met and married Haden, who recently past, and enjoyed bring his five children into her life. At this point in her life she has no plans on retiring and is enjoying the learning more and more about behavioral optometry and it’s science every year. Dorothy also let us know that just last week she became a great grandmother for the 13th time!

Our first speaker today was Dr. Erin Foley of Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center in Golden, Colorado. Erin wanted to take her time today to introduce herself and some of the treatments she does in her office to our newest members. Dr. Erin Foley has been in practice in Golden for 13 years this February 1st, she and her ex husband started Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic February 1997 after moving here from California where she had practiced since graduating from Chiropractic College in 1987. She also offers acupuncture for which, she has had 500 hours of school and 3 months of internship, Erin reminded us that most people who train in acupuncture have not gone through the school and training that she has. When looking for an acupuncturist keep in mind that the level of education and training is very important as to the results you can expect! Dr. Foley then explained that in her office she uses low force chiropractic and uses both a drop table and an activator for the patients’ adjustments. She also went over some of the areas she works with commonly in her practice. Shoulder injuries – most commonly are tendonitis (front of the shoulder) and rotator cuff (back of the shoulder), elbow injuries – Golfers elbow (inside of the elbow) & tennis elbow (outside of the elbow), and Erin reminded us that you do not have be a golfer or tennis player to get these injuries. Dr. Foley also sees many clients with hand and wrist injuries, which is most commonly treated with the activator such as carpel tunnel (which she treats, if in the early stages) and the relatively new trigger thumb – which Erin treats with both chiropractic and acupuncture. Other common injuries Erin sees are hip and knee injuries that are treated both with the activator and for the hips the drop table, most hip problems are caused by a twisted hip joint and can cause many other problems because it will throw of your gait and balance. The base of your body the feet and ankles were the last area Erin wanted to cover today – with ankles, Erin most commonly sees are sprains which she very successfully treats with acupuncture. The last problem Erin discussed was planter fasciitis – or tightness and severe heel pain – which can be attributed to your hip and gait, Dr. Foley treats this ailment, with great success, with both disciplines acupuncture and chiropractic. Dr. Foley’s last comment was about “Wolff’s Law” which is essentially the observation that bone changes its external shape and internal architecture in response to the stress acting on it. So, if you are out of alignment your bones will shift to accommodate for pain and stability. If you are looking for an experienced chiropractor or acupuncturist that will listen to your needs call Dr. Erin Foley and set up an appointment!

Today’s second speaker was Laura Kilty of Shaklee in Golden, Colorado. Laura wanted to remind us about the Shaklee Cinch Weight Loss Program. She talked to us about this last year about this time and Laura wanted to go over the Cinch Program again because this is the time of year where we are re-evaluating if we like where we are at. We are gearing up to make some changes, now this may be you or someone you know, but it all starts with just 10lbs. Laura went on to discuss that being overweight is associated with the four main health challenges – heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. For the men in our lives there is another reason – extreme weight gain lowers testosterone, a recent study shows that for men who gained 30lbs, that weight gain lowered their testosterone as much as if they had aged 10 years. With most diets today you loss muscle mass, which in turn lowers your body’s ability to burn calories. Keep in mind that 1 pound of muscle burns 50 calories and on a typical diet you loss both muscle and fat – so when you go off the diet your body is burning fewer calories than before because of the loss in muscle mass, so you need to eat fewer calories to maintain that weight. Most of us don’t – so we gain that weight back plus more. So keeping that in mind, the Shaklee Cinch Weight Loss Program is based on scientific fact – not fad. Science tells us that leucine helps the body retain and build muscle, in the Cinch program you will find the right balance of leucine and protein which will help you keep the muscle you need and loss the pounds and inches you want. In clinical studies all of the participants lost weight, which you would expect but the amazing part was that they retained their lean muscle mass and lost only the fat. This keeps the body burning calories at the highest level. The Shaklee Cinch Program is a meal replacement program, you simply replace 2 meals a day with a Cinch shake or meal-in-a-bar and then for your third meal you eat a “sensible” meal. They also have a snack bar, the 3 in 1 Boost and Cinch Energy Tea. For meal replacement, the Shaklee Cinch Shakes, come in five flavors each containing 24 grams of protein – Vanilla, Chocolate, Café Latte, Whey Protein Vanilla (non soy), and Strawberry, and the Shaklee Meal in a Bar comes in three flavors – each with 20 grams of protein with a leucine boost – Blueberry Almond Crisp, Almond Crunch and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip. The 3 in 1 Boost is a vitamin with green tea and supplements to work as a blood sugar regulator and fat burner, and the Cinch Energy Tea for a natural energy boost comes in two flavors Regular and Pomegranate. The Cinch Snake Bars for that pick me up during the day comes in three flavors each with 10 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber – Chocolate Decadence, Lemon Cranberry, and Peanut Butter Crunch. This year Shaklee is teaming up with author of “Just 10lbs.” and intervention specialist, Brad Lamm, who has appeared on Oprah and a regular contributor to the Dr. Oz show. Brad has become a Cinch user, believes in the product and has become a Cinch user. If the Cinch Program is the right program for you at under 10.00 a day – give Laura a call and set up a time for you to learn more about the program!!

Laura Kilty of Shaklee was our second speaker today and her talk today started out with Laura stating – Let’s do some Health Building!

We know that our environment, food supply and diet has changed more in the last 50 years than in most of human history. Our food supply:

* Has ever-increasing amounts of chemicals (pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics, additives and preservatives)

* Has ever-decreasing amounts of nutrients (due to soil depletion, processing and storage). Add to that the genetically modified foods that we have no idea what the long term effects are.

We have to realize that modern food may fill our stomachs and please our palettes, but it does not feed and fortify our cells…and that is where our true health begins.

We know that our bodies need to be fueled to run smoothly and to build health. Now if you don’t want to take supplements, that’s fine as long as you…

* Eat adequate high quality protein daily

* Drink 10-12 cups of purified water every day

* Eat a minimum of 9 servings of fresh fruit and veggies every day

* Eat certified organic food only

* Do not eat any processed, refined, pre-packaged, instant foods

* Do not eat sugar, white flour or fast foods

* Do not consume caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs or medications

* Exercise every day

* You do not breath any toxic chemicals

* You have a healthy family history

* You are perfectly healthy

* You live a relaxed, stress-free, positive, happy life

If you live a life like this…I want to be you!! You are providing your body with the necessities of good health.

If on the other hand, you’re like most Americans….we need to supplement our diet wisely because we are definitely not getting all the nutrients from our diet.

We know how to properly maintain our cars, homes and pets yet we balk at taking care of our most important asset…our health.

So what’s the answer?

* Eat foods as close to their natural state as possible. Choose organic if you can

* Drink pure water

* Exercise regularly

* Limit exposure to toxins

* Provide the body all the necessary building blocks for good health

Let’s talk about those building blocks…….

Shaklee’s Vitalizer is an easy place to start. This is a small blister packet of 6 supplements that provide 80 nutrients. The supplements in this pack are delivered with the SMART technology, so the right nutrient goes to the right place at the right time.

Shaklee’s Vitalizer contains:

* 23 essential vitamins and minerals

* More calcium than the leading brand – 500 mg

* B+C Complex maintains nutrient levels for 12 hrs

* Ultra pure fish oil

* All 8 forms of natural vitamin E

* 26 antioxidants to protect against free radical damage

* Probiotics – patented delivery system that guarantees lives delivery – good for the gut & immune system

Shaklee’s Vivix to fight against cellular aging.

* Protects and repairs DNA

* Positively impacts genetic regulators – turns on the gene for longevity

* Promotes energy in the cells

* Slows AGE protein formation. AGE can cause cellular damage that leads to early cell damage and cell death.

Add proteins for long lasting energy. Protein is an essential building block for health. Critical for muscle building and retention, tissue repair, immunity and virtually every other function in the body. We have several to choose from. They are soy based and there is a difference as to how it’s processed. Shaklee only uses non GMO soy beans and they are processed under low heat. Plus Shaklee’s soy products are water washed….most other products use high heat and a chemical wash. This compromises the integrity of the product.

Nutriferon for ultimate immune support. Every day our body is under attack from stress, poor nutrition, pollution and fatigue, which can constantly challenge your immune system.

Shaklee calls these four products “Your RX for a Healthier Life“. Shaklee members receive a 10% discount when these 4 products are send via autoship. You also get coupon for a product of your choice for $10 with your next autoship. You can get these 4 products for around $7 a day. And yes that does cost you but how much are you spending on things that aren’t good for you each day? Starbucks? Junk food? Cigarettes? It’s about priorities. You can get the Vitalizer for around $2.50 per day

If you want to start smaller, that’s ok. Just start somewhere. Shaklee’s Vita-Lea Gold is an excellent choice for those close to or over 50. This would run you about 87 cents per day.

Laura’s goal is that if you aren’t already using Shaklee supplements, you’ll start. You truly can have a positive impact on your health with very little effort. Laura would love to sit down with you or someone you know and find out what your concerns are and start to build a healthy living plan.

Today’s first speaker was Cindi Thordarson of EcoGraphics Printing in Lakewood, Colorado. Cindi took time today to discuss the evolution in typesetting and file storage in the last 25 years. When Cindi first started in the printing industry her first job was at a pre-press office in Spokane, Washington. Pre-press shops were common back in the 80′s – they were offices that offered design, layout and set up for printing. The typesetting computer they had was called a Linotype CRTronic 360, the Linotype CRTronic was a desktop computer with a 4″ by 6″ green computer screen - all of the information you typed in had to by started with a code to tell the computer what typeface, was there an indent and and any other special information that you needed. It was a very complicated system and for an 18 year old, with the attention span of a gnat, it was a fun learning experience. They would set up artboards by using the type output by the Linotype CRT and photos - that artboard would be made into a negative (similar to the negative you used to get with your photographs) and that image would then be burned onto a metal plate for printing. As the advent of computers took over the printing industry typesetting now uses programs such as InDesign and Corel Draw which are graphics design programs that allow designers and printers to simply design and edit layouts. The system that they have at EcoGraphics Printing is all electronic – where they send the art from one computer to another computer where the plates for the presses are electronically etched with a laser. The other items that Cindi showed us were the different modes of storage devices they have used in the printing industry over the last 15 years. The first 2 items Cindi showed us were the ever poplar 5.5 inch disk and a 3.25 inch disk – which we used for years and now it’s impossible to find a computer that has either disk drive, each of these had limited storage capacity. The second item she discussed was called a Syquest drive – she did not have a sample of this as they threw theirs away about five years ago after transferring all of the customers records to CD’s. The Syquest was the first external hard drive and had disks that were about the size of an old 45 record and about a half inch thick and only held 44mb of information. The next move was the Iomega Jaz Drive, which when introduced was a 1 gb storage device, and later improved to a 2 gb storage. The disk itself was setup in a 3.5 in format and about a quarter inch thick. Cindi stated that although they have not thrown away all their Jaz disks they no longer have the drive hooked up to any computer. She, then moved on to the ever present CD’s which can store up to 700 mb – all computers today have at least 2 drives and enables them to transfer from one cd to another with ease. The last thing – Cindi showed us was the latest and greatest – the flash drive – these plug into the usb port on your computer and can provide up to 16 gb of storage space in a device as big as your thumb. Cindi was nice enough to remind us that although these drives are very durable – they will not survive a dog chewing on them – speaking from experience… At EcoGraphics Printing they work very hard to keep their company as eco-friendly as possible working with water miscible cleaners, soy based inks and working with a paper supplier that is Forest Service Certified. Keep Cindi in mind when you need to re-design your image – they have everything you need to re-define your graphics package.

Laura Kilty, of Shaklee, in Golden Colorado was our second speaker today. Laura started off her talk today with some crazy health statistics. Number 1 – 44 million American are at risk for osteoporosis. Number 2 – 50% of women over the age of 50 are at risk. Number 3 – Approximately 10 million people already have osteoporosis and 34 million have low bone mass – bones so brittle they can just break. Number 4 – 78% of women over the age of 20 get less than 100% of their daily calcium needs. Number 5 – Osteoporosis is a silent disease and develops as we age. Laura went on to explain that bones are a living dynamic tissue that are always changing. New bone is constantly being added and old bone is constantly be dissolved and reabsorbed, some thing that many of us don’t realize. There are specialized cells in our that break down the old, weak bones and other cells that replace them with new strong bones. If we give our bodies the nutrients – everyday and excise regularly – the system works like clock work. Our larger longer bones, such as your arm and leg bones are very dense and are completely replaced about every 10-12 years – with our less dense bones, such as your spine are replaced about every 2-3 years. Ideally the process of bone breakdown and rebuilding are balanced, but problems can arise when internal/external factors speed up mineral loss from the bone and can impede the bone repair and rebuilding. The most important element of our bones is the minerals, equally important is the balance between the minerals. Such as to much phosphorous will create poor bone structure or without enough magnesium, the calcium cannot be absorbed by the bone. Also B6 can assist the magnesium to get the calcium into the bone structure. Our bones need a good supply of minerals and nutrients every day, along with daily exercise to maintain a healthy balance. When osteoporosis starts the old bone is being reabsorbed faster than the new bone is being created, there fore the bones lose density and becomes thin and more porous. This gradual decrease in bone mass and density can begin as early as the teen years, about 85% of our adult bone mass is achieved by age 18 in girls and 20 in boys. But that lack of a healthy diet and lack of exercise are leading to people in their 20′s losing bone mass. Thinking of osteoporosis not as a calcium deficiency disease but a disease of excessive bone loss. You can take all the calcium supplements you want but if your diet and lifestyle choices are unhealthy or if the medicines you are on cause you to lose calcium, you will still experience more calcium loss from your bones than you can take in through diet. There are some ways to prevent bone loss - first talk to your doctor, ask for blood levels to be run and see where you stand with a bone density scan. Second – eat the very best diet you can – everyday. Remember consistency is the key. Third – Exercise your way to stronger bones. The strain that exercise provides on your bones stimulates the formation of new bone. Weight bearing exercises 3-4 times a week for 20 minutes at the very best. Fourth – Stay away from soda and other carbonated beverages. Researchers have shown a direct link between to much phosphorous and calcium loss. Fifth – Limit or avoid coffee, alcohol and smoking, each of these create a negative calcium balance in the body. The bone mineral content of smokers is 15-30% lower in women and 10-20% lower in men. Sixth – Take a multivitamin/mineral every day. You need one to fill in the gap from what you are not able to get from your diet, all those nutrients matter. Shaklee’s Vita-Lea has 450 mg of calcium and scientific research has proven that Shaklee’s Vita-Lea improves bone density in healthy postmenopausal women. Talk with you doctor about the calcium supplement you are taking, most doctors recommend 1000-1500 mg of calcium for women and 1200 mg for men. When you are looking for a calcium supplement it is wise to know the company making it, most calcium products are pack so tightly that it passes right through you without dissolving, thereby negating the positive effects you should be getting. Another thing to keep in mind about store bought supplements NBC did a study and found that 90% of supplements on the the grocery store shelves have a contain small quantities of lead. It is wise to know the company you are purchasing your calcium and other supplements from. Shaklee’s OsteoMatrix provides 250 mg of calcium per little caplet plus it has all the goodies in proper ratio that the body needs to build and maintain strong bones. Shaklee has clinical proof that consumption of just 2 caplets (500mg) resulted in a significant increase in blood calcium levels as measured over a 12 hour period. Lastly, Laura wanted to reminded us about Vitamin D and how it stimulates the absorption of calcium and with the use of sun screen our absorption of Vitamin D from the sun has decreased. What you are getting form your multi vitamin and calcium supplement should be fine but you made need more. When looking for a high quality multi-vitamin and calcium supplement – talk to Laura Kilty at Shaklee for an healthy alternative!

Dr. Erin Foley Cruse, of Mountain Lifestyle Chiropractic & Acupuncture, was our first speaker today, she has been practicing for 23 years and has been in the same location – in Golden, Colorado for the last 13 years. She has remained busy through the last year with returning customers and referrals, she is a member of several groups including the Applewood Business Owners Association, Golden Chamber and Connect Club. Erin wants to thank all of us for our referrals and patronage. Erin really enjoys her work and loves the patients that she works with, making her job fun! Dr. Erin Foley Cruse spoke today about the acupuncture side of her business and how she is able to help people with a variety of problems. One of the first she talked about how acupuncture works on the bodies channels of energy – when working with a patient Erin says its kind of like hitting the keys on a keyboard. The different parts of the body are helped by treating your Qi (pronounced Chee) in certain areas. The Qi Energies treated are the Lung Energy – which is your defensive Qi, for fighting off major diseases, the Heart Energy – the spiritual energy and works with your mental energy, the Kidney Energy – the reproductive and lower back energy, The Spleen Energy – which helps your digestive energy, and the Liver Energy – that works the sinus, vascular, and nerve energy. People that have migraines or allergies usually need work on their Liver Energy, because this releases the channels of energy that work with our vascular health. Acupuncture treatment is like peeling back the layers of an onion – you solve one issue and there may be another lying beneath the surface. Many people here in Colorado suffer from severe allergies due to the grasses and trees that propagate the area, allergies can be a year round problem. Dr. Erin Foley Cruse has dealt with many of these issues and said that the last couple years have been really bad for allergy sufferers here because of the warm winters and the unrelenting growth of grasses and the cottonwood trees that seemed to last forever last spring. Many of her clients go to Erin when the allergens are high in the air but the best course of treatment is to maintain your defenses throughout the year. Clearing your Energy Channels throughout the year will maintain your system when the worst of the allergens are in the air. Dr Erin Foley Cruse also spoke about working chiropractic and acupuncture together to get the best result for the patient. Erin used an example of a client that has Fibromyalgia and bulging disks in her back – she uses soft chiropractic measures and acupuncture to help all of the issues her client is facing. They have worked out a plan that allows her client the best life that she can have working the two disciplines together for the best outcome for her client. Migraines are another of Erin’s clients issue and with the mainstream treatment which involves a caffeine treatment, Erin has a combination of chiropractic and acupuncture that has helped many of her patients. There are several of her clients that have had migraines and now get 1 treatment a month just to prevent them from taking prescription drugs, and giving them their life back! If you need a chiropractor or acupuncturist to work with you to deal with migraines, allergies, or all the health issues that could be helped holistically - Dr. Erin Foley Cruse of Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic and Acupuncture Center is there to peel back the onion and find out what your body needs.

Dr. Erin Foley Cruse * Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center * 303.271.1701 * www.mtnlifestyleschiropractic.com

Our second speaker today was Laura Kilty of Shaklee – Laura spoke today about Being Happy. Four ways to work on body happiness for yourself is -Number 1 - Eat a good diet rich in color with whole grains, shop on the outer edge of the grocery store – remember that is where the freshest and healthiest foods are. Number 2- Regular exercise, a combination of cardio and weight training can really improve your mood! Number 3 – Take time everyday for yourself – find things that bring you joy and do it – even if it is only 10-15 mins a day. Number 4 – Always be good to yourself – watch your self talk. We all have a tendency to have a negative self talk with ourselves, watch this and instead of saying to yourself ” That was stupid!” say to yourself ”Well that didn’t go well but I learned from that and it will go better next time!” There are also nutrients that can help support your body and brain - and move you to a more tranquil state of mind. Most people would have to eat over 3000 calories a day of organic food to get the nutrients your body needs. Shaklee offer a few items that help balance your nutritional needs without the 3000 calories. The first item is Shaklee Vita-Lea, because it’s almost impossible to get all your nutritional needs covered everyday. The capsules dissolve quickly and completely, clinical studies have proven that the Shaklee Vita-Lee have proven that with consistent use lowers cholesterol, lowers homocystine – a by product of your body that can cause heart attacks, higher calcium levels – which increases bone density, and improves your immune system. Shaklee’s B Complex – known as the Stress Vitamin or the Happy Vitamin. Every one’s needs for vitamin B can change day to day – things that can change your need for vitamin B are stress, a high sugar diet, infections, alcohol, processed foods, prescription medication and caffeine. With a good B Complex you can convert your food into energy, control food cravings, balance your blood sugar levels, help with fatigue and low energy, help your cardio function and keep normal brain function. Shaklee’s B Complex has a patent pill coated with folic acid that slows absorption and will not give you the niacin rush that you get from store bought B complex vitamins. Another good item to add to you bathroom cabinet is Shaklee’s Stress Relief Complex – this is a combination of Chinese Herbs, Taurine & complex Amino Acids. This combinations calms without drowsiness, relieves tension while promoting alertness, blunt cortisol production improves concentration and helps with your sleep cycle during time of high stress. This helps when you are going through a high stress time in your life – it’s 20 minutes to relaxation. It can help you through panic attacks, mood swings, irritability, emotional stress and life changes. The last item that Laura talked about was Shaklee’s Mood Lift – a herbal remedy designed for mild depression or “the blues”. It’s main ingredient is St. John’s Wort – referred to as natural Prozac with anti-depressant properties. This pill is good for mild depression and that low feeling – it also helps with anxiety, insomnia and seasonal depression – you need to take it for 4-6 weeks for the best results. This should not be taken with prescription anti-depressants. Talk to Laura if you need to get some nutrients into your diet!

Helen Masterson, of Masterson & Friends Communication, spoke next and related our marketing and networking to the “Tao of Pooh”. Sometimes expert advice come from where you least expect it. Winnie the Pooh will tell you that he is a “bear of a little brain”, but he is also a bear of grea wisdom because of the feelings of his friends are Pooh’s greatest concern.

As an example Pooh won’t stay in his corner of the 100 acre woods waiting for others to come to him. He would say: “You have to go to them sometimes.” So Helen adds. We need to think: who can we meet with in the next few weeks to “refresh” our network? What are we doing this week and this month to get to events nd meeting new prospects? The point is to get back out there, dust off your business cards, put a smile on your face… and remember that referral pop up in seconds.

While Pooh is visiting Eeyore, who can sometimes be difficult, because Pooh doesn’t know if Eeyore is listening. We, here in this group of women, were born to multi-task-hold and rock the baby, while cooking dinner and listen to someone who is talking to you. In this multi-tasking world there are times when we need to slow down, concentrate and really listen. In other words – stop multi-tasking, be patient and listen, so you don’t miss the point completely. When talking to someone who doesn’t appear to be listening, just slow down and be patient – they may just have a small piece of fluff in his ear.

Pooh often goes to Owl for important advice. Owl knows that social networking has become really important in our new world. The sites like MySpace and Facebook have hundreds of millions of members, how can you use these new formats in your business model. Owl says, wisely, that being online can be used as a powerful tool, but only if it’s directed in the right places. By spreading your message willy nilly across the social web won’t get you anywhere. Says Owl “Every social network has it’s own strengths and own character, by taking the time to get to know them individually is what will make the crucial difference in getting the most out o them. Owl states don’t think the social media will save you, it is just a tool in building a business.

Although Pooh is the most beloved character, there is no doubt that members of the 100 Acres Woods turn to Christopher Robin for help solving their problems. He is always able to sort out their problems and helps solve them personally. Like Christopher Robin, we should always respond to individual requests for help by brainstorming or helping someone think through their issue. Offer access to your customers and most importantly make personal gestures – pick up the phone instead of relying only on e-mail. In an age when we are dominated by technology, the human touch has great impact on your clients. Keep your contacts alive by writing a note or calling everyone in you network one or two times a year.

And Finally, “Always watch where you are going, otherwise, you may step on a piece of the 100 Acre Woods that was left out by mistake.” Pooh rarelysat around, he always moved about the 100 Acre Woods carefully and conscientiously and got everything done in due time. When plans don’t work out – well – they just didn’t – no big deal. We have all come this far and so there’s no point getting stressed out until your seams split – make a new plan and get on with it!

Progress seems to be an immediate all or nothing game, but remember that if you aren’t watching where your going and just rushing about with out a plan like Tigger, you may miss out on some wonderful opportunity.

Just a few lessons from the lovable bear who’s stuffed with fluff.

Our first speaker today was a guest speaker from Thrivent Financial, Chris Holgarth, who has been in financial planning for 14 years. He started his talk today speaking how the recession, we are all feeling, started. After 9-11, we were all told to go shopping to stimulate the economy. Then came in the mortgage back securities and the start of the foreclosures. When the banks started to suffer the first foreclosures - the level of failures lead to the trouble in the banking industry. Our government brought in the stimulus package to stabilize the economy, which to some extent it has. Existing housing sales are up from the lows of last year but we are down 42% from the highs of 3-5 years ago. The recent upsurge in existing home sales are due to lower pricing and the first time buyer program. Keep in mind, that although home prices have stabilized here and are rebounding slowly – the median house price in Detroit is 38,000 dollars. Also, Chris spoke about how the unemployment rate is a lagging indicator in a recession, most employers have cut their staff to survive and will not hire new employees until it is absolutely necessary. Some of the larger employers will still be cutting back just to keep the books in balance. Other areas to watch are the energy markets, gas, natural gas, electricity and new green alternative energy sources and emerging markets overseas, all of which are on the rise right now. The market is actually looking up on the 5 year speculation, so it is moving back up slowly. Is the Fiscal Stimulus working – well the credit markets are starting to lend again and housing is starting to stabilize-although consumer confidence is still down. If you are planning retirement look at rebalancing your portfolio to get a better balance with the current market – Thrivent Financial is there to help you work out were you need to be and how you may need to work the market until your retirement to get the best return on your investments.

Today’s second speaker was Laura Kilty of Shaklee, she spoke about our immune system. Our immune systems are not only designed to fight colds and flu but also cancer and other auto immune diseases that affect our general population. Laura talked about several of the Shaklee products that help support our natural immune system. The Defend and Resist Complex – contains echinacea, black elderberry, larch tree and zinc – that helps super charge your immune system at the first sign of a cold or flu. Just take 6 tablets throughout the day for 7 days and it helps your body stop replicating the virus thus stopping it, in it’s track. Not meant to be taken long-term but just when you need the extra boost. Her second item was Shaklee Garlic Complex, garlic is a natural antibiotic and helps also with lowering your cholesterol & triglycerides, raises the good HDL, helps fight bacterial and fungal infections, ance and can help lower blood glucose levels. Taking 2 Shaklee’s Garlic Complex tablets is the equivalent to eating a clove of fresh garlic – but in dissolves lower in the intestines – so you don’t get the garlic smell. Her third immune defense supplement is vitamin C – humans are the only mammal that doesn’t produce on its own – we need to get it from the foods we eat or supplements. vitamin C is a natural antihistamine and helps boost your good cholesterol, some of the other good things it does for your body is it helps reduce bruising, reduces your risk of cataracts and can be helpful with arthritis symptoms. Some of the other items to help with your immune system this cold and flu season are Shaklee’s NutriFeron a complete herbal wellness program for your body and OptiFlora – which is a probiotic to keep your digestive tract in order as this is your first line of defense with 70% of our immune cells residing in our colon. So for your immune health keep Shaklee in mind for all your immune needs.

We had another spotlight speaker today – Laura Kilty, with Shaklee. Laura became involve with Shaklee over 5 years ago due to health concerns that were not being resolved with health products off the shelf. She was introduced to Shaklee through a friend and found that the products were incredibly effective.

Shaklee has been in business since 1959 and has been on the green band wagon ever since. They have a Climatic Neutral Certification and are carbon neutral – leaving no footprint. Shaklee has built their products on science, they have never had a product recalled. The Shaklee Basic H cleaner has been totally green since 1960 and is used in such environments as Jacques Cousteau’s Ocean adventures because it is biodegradable. It has also been used in the Biosphere and many underwater habitats for the same reason. The White House and Vice President’s resident are now using all of the Shaklee cleaning products in an effort to become more environmentally friendly.

The Shaklee supplements and vitamins are product tested extensively and are among the safest products offered on the store shelves. They have over 90 clinical studies in many medical journals on the products they have developed over the many years in the manufacture of Shaklee vitamins and supplements. The FDA tests many of the supplements and vitamins on store shelves and have found that over 320 have some level of lead in them – such as Flintstones. Also in the FDA testing it had been shown that such items like Ginseng has either no ginseng and others have to much. This does not happen with Shaklee products as they are so vigorously tested that every tablet or liquid has the same dosage every time. No Shaklee products has any genetically modified organisms - all of the ingredients are organic and certified.

Laura went over a few of the products Shaklee offer, starting with the “Vitalizer” packets. These vitamins are offered in packs designed specifically for men, women and age, these packs contain folic acid, b and c complex and probiotic for a perfect balance of absorption. The next product Shaklee offers is “Vivix”, a cellular anti-aging supplement, this product has been developed to slow down the aging clock. The main ingredient in resveratol, the ingredient in red wine that has been touted as age fighting, a 30 day supply of “Vivix” has the equivalent of 3000 glasses of wine. Shaklee also offers a weight loss meal replacement called “Cinch”, which offers a variety of flavors and with protein and leucine to help you maintain muscle and loss inches.

The last Shaklee product Laura talked about was the “Get Clean Starter Pack” which includes all of the cleaning products from laundry to kitchen and includes the “Get Clean Caddy” which has all the dispensers you will need to make you home a clean and green home. The products come in scented and unscented versions for those who have sensitivity to smells.
