Our first speaker today was Dr. Erin Foley of Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center in Golden, Colorado. Erin wanted to take her time today to introduce herself and some of the treatments she does in her office to our newest members. Dr. Erin Foley has been in practice in Golden for 13 years this February 1st, she and her ex husband started Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic February 1997 after moving here from California where she had practiced since graduating from Chiropractic College in 1987. She also offers acupuncture for which, she has had 500 hours of school and 3 months of internship, Erin reminded us that most people who train in acupuncture have not gone through the school and training that she has. When looking for an acupuncturist keep in mind that the level of education and training is very important as to the results you can expect! Dr. Foley then explained that in her office she uses low force chiropractic and uses both a drop table and an activator for the patients’ adjustments. She also went over some of the areas she works with commonly in her practice. Shoulder injuries – most commonly are tendonitis (front of the shoulder) and rotator cuff (back of the shoulder), elbow injuries – Golfers elbow (inside of the elbow) & tennis elbow (outside of the elbow), and Erin reminded us that you do not have be a golfer or tennis player to get these injuries. Dr. Foley also sees many clients with hand and wrist injuries, which is most commonly treated with the activator such as carpel tunnel (which she treats, if in the early stages) and the relatively new trigger thumb – which Erin treats with both chiropractic and acupuncture. Other common injuries Erin sees are hip and knee injuries that are treated both with the activator and for the hips the drop table, most hip problems are caused by a twisted hip joint and can cause many other problems because it will throw of your gait and balance. The base of your body the feet and ankles were the last area Erin wanted to cover today – with ankles, Erin most commonly sees are sprains which she very successfully treats with acupuncture. The last problem Erin discussed was planter fasciitis – or tightness and severe heel pain – which can be attributed to your hip and gait, Dr. Foley treats this ailment, with great success, with both disciplines acupuncture and chiropractic. Dr. Foley’s last comment was about “Wolff’s Law” which is essentially the observation that bone changes its external shape and internal architecture in response to the stress acting on it. So, if you are out of alignment your bones will shift to accommodate for pain and stability. If you are looking for an experienced chiropractor or acupuncturist that will listen to your needs call Dr. Erin Foley and set up an appointment!

Today’s second speaker was Laura Kilty of Shaklee in Golden, Colorado. Laura wanted to remind us about the Shaklee Cinch Weight Loss Program. She talked to us about this last year about this time and Laura wanted to go over the Cinch Program again because this is the time of year where we are re-evaluating if we like where we are at. We are gearing up to make some changes, now this may be you or someone you know, but it all starts with just 10lbs. Laura went on to discuss that being overweight is associated with the four main health challenges – heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. For the men in our lives there is another reason – extreme weight gain lowers testosterone, a recent study shows that for men who gained 30lbs, that weight gain lowered their testosterone as much as if they had aged 10 years. With most diets today you loss muscle mass, which in turn lowers your body’s ability to burn calories. Keep in mind that 1 pound of muscle burns 50 calories and on a typical diet you loss both muscle and fat – so when you go off the diet your body is burning fewer calories than before because of the loss in muscle mass, so you need to eat fewer calories to maintain that weight. Most of us don’t – so we gain that weight back plus more. So keeping that in mind, the Shaklee Cinch Weight Loss Program is based on scientific fact – not fad. Science tells us that leucine helps the body retain and build muscle, in the Cinch program you will find the right balance of leucine and protein which will help you keep the muscle you need and loss the pounds and inches you want. In clinical studies all of the participants lost weight, which you would expect but the amazing part was that they retained their lean muscle mass and lost only the fat. This keeps the body burning calories at the highest level. The Shaklee Cinch Program is a meal replacement program, you simply replace 2 meals a day with a Cinch shake or meal-in-a-bar and then for your third meal you eat a “sensible” meal. They also have a snack bar, the 3 in 1 Boost and Cinch Energy Tea. For meal replacement, the Shaklee Cinch Shakes, come in five flavors each containing 24 grams of protein – Vanilla, Chocolate, Café Latte, Whey Protein Vanilla (non soy), and Strawberry, and the Shaklee Meal in a Bar comes in three flavors – each with 20 grams of protein with a leucine boost – Blueberry Almond Crisp, Almond Crunch and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip. The 3 in 1 Boost is a vitamin with green tea and supplements to work as a blood sugar regulator and fat burner, and the Cinch Energy Tea for a natural energy boost comes in two flavors Regular and Pomegranate. The Cinch Snake Bars for that pick me up during the day comes in three flavors each with 10 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber – Chocolate Decadence, Lemon Cranberry, and Peanut Butter Crunch. This year Shaklee is teaming up with author of “Just 10lbs.” and intervention specialist, Brad Lamm, who has appeared on Oprah and a regular contributor to the Dr. Oz show. Brad has become a Cinch user, believes in the product and has become a Cinch user. If the Cinch Program is the right program for you at under 10.00 a day – give Laura a call and set up a time for you to learn more about the program!!

Our first speaker today was Dr. Erin Foley, of Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center in Golden, Colorado. Dr. Foley has been practicing for 24 years, working with her clients to relieve pain without drugs. Dr. Erin Foley is licensed to practice acupuncture by the Colorado Board of Chiropractic Examiners. She is also nationally certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). In the office of Dr. Foley she uses disposable and sterile needles – the acupuncture treatments are a very comfortable and relaxing experience. She works with her clients to combine the use of acupuncture with chiropractic adjustments, thus enhancing the healing and reduce recovery time. Treatments are cumulative, so with some clients she may set up 2 appointments a week at first, but as the treatments move forward Dr. Foley consults with her clients to reduce the number of treatments as the need requires. The healing art of acupuncture has been utilized for over 2000 years. It is based on the Chinese medicine theory of “meridians”, which are pathways of energy which flow through the body connecting the organs and tissues through out your body. The use of acupuncture treatments at Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic are used for pain relief, the treatment of acute conditions such as sprains or strains, as well as the treatment of chronic conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia. Acupuncture achieves these results by opening up blocked or stagnant meridian and has been proven through research to reduce inflammation and muscle spasms, as well as to release powerful pain relieving hormones called endorphins. Through her years of training Dr. Foley uses acupuncture to treat the following conditions:

Lower back pain and sciatica – working with the meridian energy of the kidney

Neck pain – working with the meridian energy of the lung

Migraine and tension headaches – working with the meridian energy of the liver

Shoulder, elbow and wrist pain – working with the energy of the triple burner meridian

Knee, leg and ankle pain – working with the meridian energy of the spleen

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome and Trigger thumb – working with the meridian energy of the lung

Fibromyalgia – with the meridian energy of the stomach

Arthritis and joint pain – working with the meridian energy of the gall bladder

Mid back and shoulder – working with the energy of the governing meridian

Menopause, hot flashes and insomnia – working with the meridian energy of the spleen

Allergies and sinus problems – working with the energy of the governing meridian

Keep in mind that for treatment many of the conditions require energy work on more than just one meridian.

Dr. Foley was asked a question about working with weight loss and smoking cessation – she commented that these acupuncture treatments use a different methodology that she has not been trained in and does not offer these services in her office.

Our second speaker today was Juli Parrott of Table Mountain Travel in Lakewood, Colorado. Juli started off her life as a French teacher and moved into the travel business in 1977 and starting Table Mountain Travel in 1987, giving her a wide range of experiences in the travel industry! Juli wanted to talk to us today about the UNESCO World Heritage sites around the world this was brought on by her latest trip to Croatia, which enabled her to visit several UNESCO sites. UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. A site that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site can be a forest, lake, desert, monument, city, building or complex that is determined to have special cultural or physical significance to history. This list is managed by the International World Heritage Program and administered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee that is composed of 21 state parties. The program was founded in 1972 for cataloging and conserving cultural and natural sites around the world, these sites receive funds from the World Heritage Funds to maintain and preserve the area for future generations. Right now there are 911 sites listed as UNESCO sites – 704 cultural, such as Memphis and its Necropolis this includes the Pyramids of Giza, 180 natural, like the Mesa Verde National Park, 27 mixed properties, like Stonehenge –which has both natural and cultural significance. To have a site nominated a country must take an inventory of its cultural and natural properties, this is called a tentative list, this is an important step because a country may not nominate a site that is not on its tentative list. The list will be evaluated by the International Council on Monuments and Sites along with the World Conservation Union. They will make recommendations to the World Heritage Committee which meets once a year to determine whether or not if these sites will be placed on the World Heritage List. There are six criteria that are used for the cultural sites – 1) Representing a masterpiece of human creative genius. 2) Exhibiting an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world. 3) Bearing a unique testimony to a cultural tradition or civilization which still exists or has disappeared. 4) Outstanding example of a type of building, architecture or technological ensemble or landscape which shows a significant stage in human history. 5) An outstanding example of traditional human settlement, whether land or sea use, being representative of a culture, or human interaction with the environment. 6) Directly associated with events, living traditions, ideas, beliefs, artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance. There are only four criteria for the Natural Sites. 1) Contains extraordinary natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance. 2) Being an outstanding example representing major stages of Earth’s history. 3) Represents significant on-going ecological and biological processes. 4) Contains important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, including those areas that contain threatened species. The UNESCO Sites in the United States include a variety of natural sites like the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde National Park and Chaco Culture National Historic Park and cultural sites such as The Statue of Liberty, Monticello & the University of Virginia and Independence Hall. If you want to see any of these spectacular sites whether in the states or abroad, Juli Parrott with Table Mountain Travel can get you there with ease!

This week we had Dr. Erin Foley-Kruse of Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center in Golden as our first speaker. Erin talked about the acupuncture services that she offers for her patients. Dr. Erin Foley-Kruse has been in practice for 22 years – spending 12 years of that time in Golden, Colorado. Her schooling in acupuncture includes a 3 year course of 500 hours of training followed by a 3 month internship and is NCAAOM certified, one a few here in Colorado. Acupuncture has been around for between 3000-5000 years in Chinese medicine, originally the needles were actually made of bone and they trained students on energy sensitive people. Acupuncture is the the use of the body meridians that are found throughout the body, releasing endorphins that relax the muscle and relieve pain. There are 14 meridian lines that run through the human body, each different meridian line helps or effects parts of the body, an example of this is working with the liver meridian can help with migraine headaches. The various meridians throughout the body can help with a variety of injuries and other problems, from mild traumatic brain injury – like what you would get from whiplash in a car accident or beginning stages of carpel tunnel syndrome. Dr Erin Foley Kruse recommends 6 sessions, beginning with a traditional Chinese diagnosis which takes about an hour and a half and will have several points of evaluation. This gives her a starting point to design a course of treatment and which meridians need to be worked on to better your health. So if you are thinking about working with an acupuncturist or a chiropractor your first call should be to Dr. Erin Foley Kruse at Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic and Acupuncture Center.

Our second speaker was Mary Walewski, standing in for Maki Delaet, of Educyber, your technology parter. Mary started her talk with a few fact or crap questions about social media, questions like does Dick Cheney have more Twitter followers than Ashton Kutcher – which is crap, or are the more employees on Linkdin than managers – crap, how about there are more people under 25 than those over 25 on Facebook – that is crap too. The opportunities of the new world of social network marketing have become things that we as business owners are looking into. Businesses are using Twitter to drive people to their business at just the right moment – such as a bakery tweeting that the bread is fresh out of the oven or a barbeque shop tweeting were their truck will be and followers show up to buy barbeque. When posting on Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter be yourself and don’t sell, just let the people see you as you are, the referrals will come in from second and third hand referrals. Such examples of this are Stephanie Meyer of the Twilight series – she started with a MySpace page and her blog, as people read it they created forums and fan pages that eventually got her a three book deal. Another example is the basis of Julie & Julia, this also came from a blog, people reading the blog started to send emails for more information – then CBS Morning News set up an interview and now she has a second book in the works. So using a blog to increase your sales with tips of your trade or posting ideas on your Facebook page is something that most businesses need to look into. There is also a business section on Facebook, although you have to personal to set one up. Keep it simple for both business and personal – and don’t post anything on your Facebook or Linkedin that you wouldn’t want your mom to see. Keep Maki and Educyber in mind when setting up your web page, or if you need help learning the new world of social networking for your business.
