Our first speaker today was Laura Kilty of Shaklee in Golden, Colorado. Laura spoke to us today after just returning from the Shaklee Global Convention. There were over 5000 people in attendance and 1000 medical professionals attended the Medical Professionals Reception. This really says a lot about the Shaklee products to have that many medical professionals in attendance. The real excitement were the two speakers this year one was Mark Kelly, the astronaut that piloted the last shuttle fight with the Endeavor this summer, they showed video from the flight and as well as Mark Kelly taking his Shaklee Vitalizer vitamins in space. The other speaker that they had this year was Aron Ralston, the mountain climber who had to cut off his arm to save his life and is the author of “127 Hours”, the story of his struggle to survive. This year Shaklee introduced no new products but updated a few of their products.

Vitalizer– All of the Vitalizer products now have a triple berry extract with black and red raspberry and blackberries-the equivalent of one cup. The berries add an increased antioxidant protection, 5 times more that the “old” Vitalizer. This increases the immune system, is good for your vision and will decrease your risk of heart attack and cancers. This new formula took Shaklee 2 years to perfect.

Vitalizer for Men– now has extra lycopene and magnesium for prostate health.

Vitalizer for Women – now includes cranberry extract, works as an effective antibiotic in the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections.

Vitalizer Gold– for those over 50 – now includes 30 mg of CoQ10. This is the same as the Shaklee CoQHeart which is CoQ10 & resveratrol. The price was only increased by 5.00.

Vivix – has a new box and they have developed a drip proof design.

They introduced two new membership programs – the first is with the purchase of Vitalizer products you can get free membership. The second is the new Membership Referral Program – this program is only available with online, with a quick and easy link in your member center. There will be a box where you can share the link via Facebook, Twitter or email with friends. You tell them how much you love the Shaklee products and how you think it would benefit their lives. When they order through this link with just a 25.00 order, you get a 25.00 credit towards your Shaklee purchases. You can you up to 250.00 of credits a month. Your friend does not have to join and will receive the products at a 15% discount.

Did you know that proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle can prevent many major diseases? Or that there has been up to a 38% decline in the nutrient content of crops in the last 50 years according to a report by the USDA? In the last 30 years there has been an increase in fast food sales of 2000%? Your body can not manufacture all of the nutrients it needs on its own and we now are not getting it from the foods we eat… how are you making sure that your body is getting the nutrients it needs to remain healthy? 90% of Americans fall short in getting essential nutrients in our diets. We think nothing of spending 4-5 dollars on Starbucks each day. Yes, it’s yummy but, does it build your health? Laura is not saying give up your Starbucks… that’s no fun. But you do have a choice. Vitalizer is just 2.64 a day, energy and vitality now – building a healthier body for the future. In a landmark study the folks that had been taking Shaklee long term were averaging less that one prescription. They had less occurrences of diabetes, heart disease and stroke versus those that took brand x or nothing. Consider the future costs of those illness and prescriptions to maintain your body. Shaklee is the only company in the world that has proof of it’s long term effectiveness. If you want to start on a healthier track in your life give Laura Kilty of Shaklee a call and she can get you started!

Today our second speaker was Helen Masterson of Masterson & Friends Communications in Arvada, Colorado. Helen wanted to discuss the Top Ten Business Tips that she has learned throughout the years. . .

1. Answer the telephone with a smile. (Even if it rings in the middle of the night – wake up and answer with a cheery hello. Especially if you are a personal information officer like me and the media is calling). When answering and the client is looking for someone else in your office ~ Never say, “They’re not in yet” or “they have left for the day” or, horrors, “they are not back from lunch yet.” Always say, “They are in a meeting, may I help you or take a message.”

2. Don’t throw anything away, especially little slips of paper with important notes. File all notes in a “Hold/Toss file. Toss only after there is no chance someone will question why you wrote something or did a certain business transaction.

3. Write everything down. Write “Memo to the Files” to document an action. If you want to copyright something, an idea or product and don’t have the time to flush out all the details, write the idea down on a piece of paper, put the paper in an envelope addressed to you and mail it. When you receive it in the mail, don’t open it, of course, but put it sealed in a file. Just in case.

4. Walk with purpose. Always act like you know exactly where you are going – even if you don’t. Out-of-town tip: Carry the local newspaper with you (never USA Today. That is a dead ringer you are from out of town.) If you have down time, just like a local, read the paper.

5. Some people just won’t buy your product or service. It is no disgrace to move on to someone or something else. If you plan a special event and it isn’t working, pull the plug. Move on. Some mountains just can’t be moved.

6. Always be pleasant and fair to everyone in the office. You never know who will end up as president of the company.

7. If you can, volunteer your time out of your profession or comfort zone. You will probably meet remarkable people and learn something completely new.

8. Don’t hesitate to ask advice from your peers. Professional people see helping other professionals as a sign of good teamwork.

9. Watch holidays and special “days”. Before you plan anything involving other people, check the calendar first. The end of Daylight Saving (no “s”) Time is especially a problem for an evening event. Suddenly it gets dark at 4:30 instead of 5:30. People get moody and want to go home instead of to your event.

10. Listen. Listen and evaluate before you come to any conclusion.

If you are looking for a writer to create a new brochure or a news release - Helen Masterson will craft the words to make you sound your best!

Helen Masterson * Masterson & Friends Communication * 303.467.9680 * Helenguestguidepublicationscom

Our first speaker today was Pam Thomas of Thrivent Financial in Wheat Ridge Colorado. Pam talked today about something that 1 in 6 Americans will go through in their lifetime. Identity theft is running through the country – Pam started her talk today with the statistics of identity theft going on in our country. The stats break down like this: 25% credit card fraud – 10% Government benefits – 15% employment fraud – 14% bank and loan fraud – 13% utilities fraud and 23% miscellaneous. Employers are using credit report with new hires these days and think if someone was using your credit to run up huge amounts of debt – a potential employer takes a look at it and doesn’t hire you – you look like a high risk. Another scary possibility is some one steals your identity and gets arrested or in trouble with the law – they don’t show up for court dates and now you have an arrest warrant out for you. This happens more often that we would like think. There are many ways for criminals to get your information, the low tech ways that are used – dumpster diving, stealing your purse or wallet, the waiter/waitress at a restaurant copying your card number when they have your card and at the ATM they can capture your pin number simply by standing behind you. The high tech ways are phishing – where you get an email that looks legitimate and when you click on the link from the site you enter they capture your computers information. Pharming is the latest – really frightening – posing as a legitimate business sending you an email, but in this case just by opening the email they can get your information. They have codes embedded in the email that are activated just by your simple action of reading that information. To minimize your opportunities for identity theft there are several steps you can take – here are a few ways to do that: At home – have a locked mailbox and when you are traveling put a stop on your mail or have a friend pick it up. Shred financial records and keep current information in a locked file cabinet. Make your PIN number and other passwords difficult without using family names or dates. When talking on the phone don’t give out any personal information, social security number, or mother’s maiden name unless you are doing business with the person requesting the information and trust you know who you are talking to. Get copies of your credit reports annually and review the information carefully. When on the Internet don’t respond to unsolicited emails, especially, if they are requesting any personal information. Have current virus software on your computer and update it regularly and have a firewall. When you are out shopping or working keep a close eye on your wallet or purse – don’t leave it laying around where strangers will have access, it only takes a moment for someone to take it. Keep only those items that you need in your purse or wallet, it keeps you exposure low with limited items. When standing at the ATM – be aware of your surroundings – if someone is standing behind you shield the key pad with your other hand and don’t use any part of your social security number as your PIN. Try to avoid letting merchants taking your credit card out of your line of site. The last item Pam suggested – don’t carry your social security card in your purse or wallet. If you become the victim of identity theft, Pam Thomas of Thrivent Financial, offers ideas for how you should handle it. First and foremost stay calm and act fast, during the first week makes all the necessary reports to your bank and credit cards, then contact the police, most police departments now have departments that deal with identity theft. Report the fraudulent activity to the Federal Trade commission, keep a record of your conversation. Contact the 3 major credit reporting agencies and tell them you are a victim of identity theft, request a free copy of your credit report, place a fraud alert on your account – requiring that you are contacted to approve new credit requests and once a again keep a record of your conversation. Once you have the reports go through and identify the fraudulent activity and contact those creditors telling them that you have become a victim of identity theft and close the accounts at the consumer’s requests. then have each company send you a written verifictaion of the closing of the account. Follow up with the credit reporting agencies with a letter – summarize your phone conversation and report any new discoveries or information. Fixing your credit after you have your identity stolen can take over 116 hours to fix and cost well over 500.00, not a cheap adventure and none of us want to go through. If you need advice on your retirement planning or have other questions about your financial situation do not hesitate to give Pam Thomas of Thrivent Financial a call.

This week we had Dr. Erin Foley-Kruse of Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center in Golden as our first speaker. Erin talked about the acupuncture services that she offers for her patients. Dr. Erin Foley-Kruse has been in practice for 22 years – spending 12 years of that time in Golden, Colorado. Her schooling in acupuncture includes a 3 year course of 500 hours of training followed by a 3 month internship and is NCAAOM certified, one a few here in Colorado. Acupuncture has been around for between 3000-5000 years in Chinese medicine, originally the needles were actually made of bone and they trained students on energy sensitive people. Acupuncture is the the use of the body meridians that are found throughout the body, releasing endorphins that relax the muscle and relieve pain. There are 14 meridian lines that run through the human body, each different meridian line helps or effects parts of the body, an example of this is working with the liver meridian can help with migraine headaches. The various meridians throughout the body can help with a variety of injuries and other problems, from mild traumatic brain injury – like what you would get from whiplash in a car accident or beginning stages of carpel tunnel syndrome. Dr Erin Foley Kruse recommends 6 sessions, beginning with a traditional Chinese diagnosis which takes about an hour and a half and will have several points of evaluation. This gives her a starting point to design a course of treatment and which meridians need to be worked on to better your health. So if you are thinking about working with an acupuncturist or a chiropractor your first call should be to Dr. Erin Foley Kruse at Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic and Acupuncture Center.

Dr. Erin Foley Kruse * Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic and Acupuncture Center * 303.271.1701 * krusedcyahoocom (krusedcyahoocom)

Our second speaker was Mary Walewski, standing in for Maki Delaet, of Educyber, your technology parter. Mary started her talk with a few fact or crap questions about social media, questions like does Dick Cheney have more Twitter followers than Ashton Kutcher – which is crap, or are the more employees on Linkdin than managers – crap, how about there are more people under 25 than those over 25 on Facebook – that is crap too. The opportunities of the new world of social network marketing have become things that we as business owners are looking into. Businesses are using Twitter to drive people to their business at just the right moment – such as a bakery tweeting that the bread is fresh out of the oven or a barbeque shop tweeting were their truck will be and followers show up to buy barbeque. When posting on Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter be yourself and don’t sell, just let the people see you as you are, the referrals will come in from second and third hand referrals. Such examples of this are Stephanie Meyer of the Twilight series – she started with a MySpace page and her blog, as people read it they created forums and fan pages that eventually got her a three book deal. Another example is the basis of Julie & Julia, this also came from a blog, people reading the blog started to send emails for more information – then CBS Morning News set up an interview and now she has a second book in the works. So using a blog to increase your sales with tips of your trade or posting ideas on your Facebook page is something that most businesses need to look into. There is also a business section on Facebook, although you have to personal to set one up. Keep it simple for both business and personal – and don’t post anything on your Facebook or Linkedin that you wouldn’t want your mom to see. Keep Maki and Educyber in mind when setting up your web page, or if you need help learning the new world of social networking for your business.
