This hair show is strictly for knowledge, they give you the techniques so you can Learn Better, Earn Better and Live Better. The local distributors offer hair shows in the spring and fall, Edna will be attending the one offered this October, at the local shows you get a lot of information and knowledge, but it is tempered with end sales in mind. These shows do offer more product knowledge on the different lines with information about the new products, and techniques. As well as the new regulations and classes offered by DORA. Every fall DORA (Department of Regulatory Agency) has education classes set up on any new sanitation issues or any changes in licensing. Stylists at the Hair Place have an education fund that they contribute to so that the money is always available for any education that they chose to attend.

Helen Masterson of Masterson & Friends Communications, of Wheat Ridge Colorado was our second speaker today. Today Helen talked about how after graduating with a Bachelor of Science from CU, she went to work for a large advertising agency in Denver, Broyles, Allegaugh and Dais. Helen was hired as a flunkie in the production department. A great way for Helen to get her start because she learned the nuts and bolts advertising from the ground.

This was a very large firm with clients such as Continental Airlines and The State of Colorado. This firm was also an old established firm as Helen realized when Mr. Broyles, and they always called him Mr. Broyles, asked Helen to go down to the basement to locate an ad that ran in 1940. Yes, 1940! Remember this was 1960, Helen found the ad… it was for a road grader ~ some what disconcerting, the model of road graders was still the same in 1960 as it had been in 1940.

As you can tell from this story – Helen started working in advertising in 1960. When Helen saw the first episode of the show Mad Men ~ it was a real shock ~ Helen felt like she had fallen in to a rabbit hole, pulling her back in time. Everything in the show was and remains spot on… the typewriters… the narrow ties… the way the characters portray the way people acted back then. Helen has a friend that she discussed the show with and her friend states that she doesn’t like the show, because of the way the women are treated. Well, Helen states – that’s the way it was.

As an example, Helen tells us, one of the secretaries, named Peggy, was the secretary for the Creative Director. There were three male copy writers and whenever they had to write copy for a female product, the first was face cream. The male copy writers asked Peggy “What do women want in this product?” Well, Peggy, virtually gave them all the copy needed and the tag line. Once this had happened with many of the major ads, the clients like the worked so much that the Creative Director was smart enough to promote Peggy to copy writer. However, the three male copy writers each had offices – with doors. The door was a status symbol in an advertising agency. They put Peggy in the Xerox room with just her desk.

The one scene that really got to Helen, was when the main character, Don Draper and his wife had a party, which included parents and their children. The men were in living room and the women were in the kitchen, when one of the little boys ran into the living room and ran into his father, who spilled his drink all over the floor. Helen knew the next line… Son… Go get your mother and have her clean this up. Really… Son… Go get your mother and have her clean this up.

Ladies, do not ever let us slip back into this mentality!

Now, Helen reminds us that things have changed. Helen had a couple examples with her, these were real ads. This first Helen showed us was from the 1890’s ~ Eat Tape Worms and Stay Thin, the next was from the 1930’s from the Lard Council on how healthy lard was. The last three ads, Helen showed us were from the 1960’s… This year the Mad Men series has moved to 1965, with the main client being Lucky Strike. There is mention of things to come… regulations on what and how you can advertise. Helen, then, passed around ads about why these regulations came to pass… Such as – More Doctors Smoke Camels… Blow Smoke in Her face and She’ll Follow You and last but not least Santa with a carton of Chesterfields. At the same time that the government came down with regulations, the National Advertising Association came out with guidelines about how an advertising agency should do business, which included accreditation. So like many of you in this room, Helen has initials after her name, APR.

But the main purpose of advertising has remained the same… sell your product or service.

David Ogilvy, considered the guru of advertising said: “When I write an advertisement, I don’t want you to tell me that you find it ‘creative’. I want you to find it so interesting that you buy the product.”

David gave this advice which still stands today: “Advertising people who ignore research are as dangerous as generals who ignore decoding the enemies signals.”

Helen has talked about this before – keep an eye on the trends and watch what your competitors are doing. Watch out for what the “Big Boys” are doing – they spend a lot of money on research, focus groups and trends.

At this point there are three trends happening in advertising sales:

Do Good and Solve a Problem – Go Subaru is having a Health Clinic, Trivent Financial had a Shredding Day and Community Bank had a Computer Reycling Day. Do GOOD.

Give An Incentive. This is a sign of the times, people are looking for bargains – Two for One, 20 Percent Off, or Buy my product and I will give you tickets to an event.

Provide useful information. Ann Kay Roche talked about records we can shred and items we should save, it was obvious that many of us don’t know what to shred and what to keep. Offer useful information that people want and need.

Now Helen wanted to give us a quick overal view of how she has put her B.S. to work and what she has learned in the field of communications: If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign that says “Cirus Coming To Town” – that’s Advertising… You put the sign on the back of an elephant and walk the elephant into town – that’s Promotion… If the elephant walks through the mayor’s flower bed – that’s Publicity… If the mayor laughs about it – that’s Public Relation… and if the town’s people go to the circus and spend a lot of money – that’s Sales.

Shrimp Bruschetta-

2tbsp or 1 package of Maria’s Salsa

2 cans Rotel tomatoes

½ avocado – sliced in chunks

20 cooked shrimp – sliced into 3 pieces

Mix together and set in the frig until cool – serve on melba toast or bagel chips.

Spinach and Artichoke Dip

1 package Mock Spinach Dip

8 oz. of cream cheese – any variety

8 oz. Sour cream

1 small jar artichoke hearts

Mix all together and set in fridge until cool. Serve with pretzels, crackers, bread chunks or veggies.

Black Bean Salsa Dip

1 package of the Black Bean Salsa Mix

2 cans Rotel tomatoes

1 avocado sliced into chunks (optional)

1 small can sliced black olives (optional)

Mix all ingredients together and set in fridge for 2 hours – serve with tortilla chips, crackers or pretzels.

Guacamole Crack

1 package or 2 tbsp of Maria’s Salsa

3 avocados mashed with a fork

Mix the ingredients together and set in fridge for 1 hour. Serve with tortilla chips, awesome on sandwiches or burgers. Warning: Once you start eating you won’t be able to stop!!!

The zucchini fruit is naturally low in calories and contains follate, potassium, vitamin A and manganese, so it is a very good fruit for your body. When using the fruit of the zucchini plant as food they are picked under 8 inches in length and the seeds are immature. Mature zucchini can be as long as 3 feet long, but when they get to this size the they fruit can become very fibrous, the seeds become hard and can be very unappetizing. Unlike the cucumber, zucchini recipes  most often involve cooking the fruit and can be prepared with a variety of cooking techniques, such as steamed, broiled, grilled, stuffed and then baked and fried. It can also be incorporated into other dishes such as souffles, bread, or can even be incorporated into cake mixes. The zucchini has a very delicate flavor and to enjoy this fruit one can simply slice it up and toss it in a pan with a little butter or oil and fry it quickly. Some fun facts that Suzanne shared with us about the zucchini, in Britain a poll of 2000 people stated that the zucchini was the 10^th favorite vegetable (yeah, it is a fruit). Next, is that in Italy, the zucchini is prepared in a variety of ways – mainly breaded and pan fried. Some restaurants in Rome specialize in deep frying the flowers, a specialty called fiori di zucca. In France, the zucchini is the main ingredient in ratatouille, which is a stew of summer fruits and vegetables prepared in olive oil and then cooked for an extended time over a low heat. This dish was originated near Nice and is used as a side dish or for lunch with bread. The French also are known for a dish called farcis, were they stuff the zucchini with meat , tomatoes and bell peppers. The Turkish people use zucchini in a popular dish called mucver or zucchini pancakes, made by shredding the zucchini and mixing it with flour and eggs then lightly frying the mixture in olive oil and served with yogurt. In Greece, they fry or boil the zucchini with other fruits, such as green chili peppers or eggplant. They also stuff the zucchini with minced meat, rice and herbs served with an avolemono sauce. In several areas in Greece, they also use the flowers stuffed with white cheese or a mixture of rice, herbs and minced meat, then deep fry them and serve with tomato sauce. Bulgarian dishes include the frying of the zucchinis and serving it with a dip made up of yogurt, garlic and dill or oven bake the zucchini sliced or grated, covered witha mixture of eggs, yogurt, flour and dill. For the traditional in us, Suzanne shared with us her Zucchini Bread recipe for us to try at home and here it is:

3 eggs

1cup oil

2 cups sugar

2 tsp vanilla

2 cups zucchini shredded

3 cups flour

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

½ tsp baking powder

Mix the sugar, flour, cinnamon, baking soda, salt and baking powder together. Combine eggs, oil and vanilla – add to the flour mixture and mix until it’s all moist. Add the zucchini and bake at 350 degrees for 45 mins to 1 hour. This will make 4 small loaves or 2 large loaves.

Shaklee made a lot of great announcements – with new products, new research studies and changes to the Shaklee compensation plan, they updated and enhanced the already lucrative compensation plan – the most exciting is the addition of cars. Shaklee has made it possible for people working up to the higher levels to earn car bonus! The Shaklee Corporation is giving more rewards earlier in people’s businesses and more payments to infinity.

The convention allowed Shaklee to introduce a couple of their new products – starting with the new Shaklee Fiber Advantage Bar, where fiber meets flavor. Laura asked us “Why would we need a fiber supplement?” Research suggests that most Americans of all ages are not consuming enough fruits, veggies and whole grains. On average only 14.5% of adults – 18 and older – consume fruits 2 or more times a day and veggies 3 or more times a day and only 8% of youths in grades 9-12 consume their recommended daily fruits and veggies. Also less than 10 percent of American adults consume their recommended number of servings of whole grains daily. High fiber diets are essential to healthy digestion and the long term health of your colon. These new Fiber Advantage Bars are made with apples, dates, cinnamon and whole grain rolled oats. You get organic – you get gluten free and low sodium with no saturated or trans fats. 1. A group of non-supplement taking people and had them take the Shaklee Vita-Lea Gold for eight weeks. Their vitamin D levels were in the insufficient range, by the end of the 8 weeks their vitamin D levels to the sufficient level. Vita-Lea Gold has 1000IU of Vitamin D.

2. Another group of non-supplement taking people and put them on an 8 week regimen of Vitalizer. By the end of the 8^thweek they all had increased their good HDL cholesterol by 15.4%, decreases their triglycerides by 13.8% and decreased their bad LDL cholesterol by 3.3%. This was just by adding Vitalizer to their morning regimen.

3. A study that used a group of post menopausal women – one group took Shaklee’s Cinch Protein Shakes, Vitalizer and included exercise and the control group that just exercised for 8 weeks. The women on the Shaklee products increased their lean muscle mass by 22%, decreased their blood pressure and increased their bone density. The effects from the above Vitalizer study also were shown in this group!

3. Add a breakfast bar – If you have a wall that seperates the kitchen from your living area cutting an opening for a breakfast bar is a great way to give your home that great room feel.

4. Install granite tile instead of a slab – Granite slabs can cost upward of 5000.00 – making the average cost of 300.00 for the granite tiles and supplies to install seems much more affordable.

5. Freshen up your bathroom with out retiling – if your bathroom is dated you can update the fixtures for a new fresh updated look. If you update the medicine cabinet (around 100.00-150.00), lighting fixtures (100.00), new faucet (75.00), a vanity (200.00-300.00) along with other touches like glass shower doors and regrouting any tile work– you can have an new bathroom for around 2000.00 to 3000.00.

6. Brighten up your basement – For those with cement walls and unfinished floors – having the cracks filled with hydraulic cement and painting first with a waterproofing paint and then a light color. Then even though it is not finished it will not feel like a dungeon.

7. Add a room – You can do this by locating a large space in their house that can be divided to create two rooms and see a big jump in return on that investment.

8. Spruce up your cabinet fronts – If your cabinets are looking tired and dated a couple quick fixes are reconditioning with oils and sanding out small scratches, painting a fresh color and updating the hardware.

9. Replacing light fixtures – Nothing shows the age of a home that light fixtures – Usually these are the first things people notice when entering your home – going with the updated styles and adding recessed canned light on a dimmer can be a quick update for your home.

10. Clean up and Tech Up your garage – clean out and organize your tools and garage storage, then think about a new garage door opener with a remote touchpad entry system.

Our second speaker today was Dr. Erin Foley of Mountain Lifestyles Chiropractic & Acupuncture in Golden Colorado. Dr. Foley started her talk today speaking about the battery light in her car, it came on and wouldn’t go off, so after a couple days once she decided it wasn’t going out and she should take her car to the mechanic. It turned out to be her battery and the mechanic diagnosed it and got car back up and running. Why would Erin tell us this story – she went on about how she is kind of like a car mechanic and your pain is your battery light. In her practice, Dr. Foley helps people manage and eliminate pain. For most people, who come to her office because they are in pain and whether it is a chronic issues that has been with them for an extended period of time or an acute event due to and injury or specific event, are in her office to avoid surgery or minimize the need for pain medication. We all know that when we go to our family physician for an ache or pain, they will prescribe pain medication and this is not always the best way to go. Long term maintenance with pain medication is not good for our kidneys or liver and can do significant damage with long term use. Dr. Foley works much like a mechanic in working with you to diagnose, treat and manage your pain with Low Force Chiropractic. Unlike what we remember from chiropractors in the 70’s-80′ – most chiropractors today are not treating with the High Force method anymore. Erin went on to explain how the nerves that run up and down your spinal cord control every your body does from the feeling in your toes to your heartbeat, so when you are out of alignment you are effecting more than just your back. Having a pinched sciatic nerve can not only cause pain in your lower back but as this nerve runs down your leg and is a big as your finger, this can have some pretty devastating effects on your life. Erin went on to talk about how many times a constant lower back ache is not actually a back issue – your hips can also be out of alignment and rotated in a way that can effect your lower back with pain and stiffness. We all have to think not only about what we are currently doing to our bodies, we are an accumulation of everything we have ever done. Our bodies are the history of many trees did we jump out of, how many times did we fall off a horse, or crash a mountain bike, all of these will effect how you age and how your spine and nerves behave as you age. A couple other items Dr Foley wanted to remind about for our total back health – sleeping on your stomach is very back for your neck and spine-the way that your curve your neck and back in this position can cause huge problems over time, also your occupation can have a huge impact on your over all back health. “Where how old you are is your business, but how old you look is mine”

Today’s second speaker was Juli Parrott from Table Mountain Travel in Lakewood, CO. Juli wanted to talk today about her recent trip to Croatia, the coastal part of what used to be Yugoslavia. The area is covered with 15 of UNESCO World Heritage Sites which encourages countries to ensure the protection of their natural and cultural heritage. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites are broken down into four categories-cultural (689 sites), natural (106 sites), mixed properties (25 sites) and countries/states (148 sites), Juli was able to visit three sites in her trip to Croatia. The beginning of the trip included a drive up the Adriatic coastline, which took them longer than the inland route, but from the pictures she brought well worth it! The first place they visited was Dubrovnik, which is positioned at the end of the Isthmus of Dubrovnik, it is a walled city and the one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They offer a two mile walking tour that will take you atop the wall, were although a very strenuous walk, the views of the port and city are beyond words. Another area that Juli visited while in Croatia was Trogir, which has a high concentration of a wide variety of architecture and also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The islands original Greek settlement still shows in the orthogonal street plan along with the Roman churches and Fortress make this city well worth visiting. Another city that Juli visited was Split, which has also survived as a Greek colony in the 6^thcentury and Roman possession in the middle ages, the diversity of populations that have built this city are once again shown in the architecture throughout the city. At the center of this city is Diocletian’s Palace, also on the UNESCO World Heritage List, built on the 4^thcentury it is the world’s most complete remains of a Roman Palace. The one complaint Juli shared with us about her stay in Split were their accomodations– they were on the fifth floor and it was 86 stairs up to their unit. One of the last place they traveled through was Kotor which is in the state of Montenegro. The Port of Kotor is a beautiful walled city – another of the UNESCO Heritage Cities, is a site with the red tile roofs and the deep blue of the Adriatic Sea. There is a hike the you can do, Juli didn’t have time, into the limestone mountains above Kotor that includes 12 castles built through the history of the region. Juli really enjoyed the history of the country and had a wonderful visit – the one surprising thing she talked about was that local you talked to had been through war – as the separation of Yugoslavia happened in the 1990’s. Most of the countrymen can tell you about the month without water and power or the bombs reigning down in the middle of the night, these tales of war are hard for us to think of as reality but was a terrible reality for the up and coming destination travel site. Our second speaker today was Terry Gore of Homemade Gourmet in Golden, Colorado. Terry just got back from vacation and forgot she was speaking, so she just did a simple talk without samples – which we were all bummed about! Our second speaker today was Ruthie Williams of Mary Kay Cosmetics, and since Ruthie could not make it Laura Kilty spoke for her. Laura got a ten minute training from Ruthie this morning in preparation for her talk, so – Laura joked – don’t be to hard on her! First Laura asked if we had all gotten our new Mary Kay catalogs, many of the items Laura will be talking about are the new items that they have introduce for the summer. The first item Laura spoke about is the New Mary Kay Liquid Lip colors – these are lipstick with the lip gloss applicator and come in a tube very much like the the lip glosses. The new applicator incorporates the coverage and finish of lipstick with easy application. The Mary Kay Liquid Lip colors come in six colors right now – cherry coffee, chocoholic, malted, raspberry ice, sherbet & royal plum and cost 13.00 a tube. Laura also covered the new Mary Kay Lipstick colors – she had a color card so we could see the true color ( as just discussed with Cindi four color does not show the true color). The new colors for the Mary Kay Crème Lipsticks are Boysenberry, Hot Mocha, Maple, Whisper, Pink Passion, Copper Star, Sunlit Sand, Icy Peach, Sunny Citrus and Blaze. Our second speaker today was Ginger Kaiser of Willows Floral in Lakewood, Colorado. She spoke to us today about selecting and caring for cut flowers. Ginger tells us that a beautiful bouquet of fresh cut flowers can turn any room into a garden, whether you get them as a gift or buy them for yourself. Sometimes even the best gardener can have trouble keeping their cut flowers fresh and beautiful indoors. A lot of the life of fresh cut flowers depends on how fresh they are when you buy them.

Ginger gave us a couple tips on buying flowers.

Take a look at the stems – they should be green and smooth not slimy or yellow.

1. When buying a bouquet – check to make sure that the water is clear and fresh.

2. Watch for broken stems or drooping buds.

Once you find your flowers and get them home, Ginger gave us a couple tips for keeping them fresh:

1. Keep them cool until you can get them in water, don’t leave them your car while making that last stop before getting home.

2. Make a fresh cut about 1 inch from the bottom of the stem.

3. Make sure your vase and all cutting tools are clean.

4. Remove all the leaves that will be under the level of the water.

5. You should only use about 1/3 of the flower food that comes with your bouquet – you can use the rest when you change then water.

6. Keep fresh flowers out of direct sunlight and drafty windows.

7. Change the water frequently – every other day is good.

Finally Ginger gave us a list of flowers with a long vase life and these are the flowers she spoke about:

1. Alstremeria – usually seen in white, although the ones Ginger had today where a deep burgundy, the flower is bell shaped and has a freckled or spotted appearance. I thought the burgundy was quite beautiful.

2. Anthirium – these are a tropical plant with usually a red or pink with a large stamen of a contrasting color, normally waxy in appearance, although more expensive than most these are a wonderful addition to any bouquet!

3. Bells of Ireland – a green foliage that has a flower like appearance up the stem. Ginger showed us a sample and we all agreed, although we had never seen it – it was really different and something we would use!

4. Blue Lepto – which is mostly used as a filler flower has the look of cherry blossoms but are blue.

5. Chrysanthemums – a flower we are all familiar with and is also used as a filler flower because of its large variety of colors.

6. Carnations – not Ginger’s favorite, but also comes in a wide variety of colors and does come in a miniature version that has become very popular in bouquets.

7. Dianthus – most of us think of this as a annual for your garden but added to a bouquet with it’s small bright red, purple, pink or white flowers, they just pop!

8. Lilies – of any variety are really long lasting although the Asiatic Lilies are less expensive and are just as colorful and last just as long as the typical Stargazer Lilies. Keep in mind when picking them out to look for stems that have the most buds that will bloom long after you bring them home!

9. Orchids – once again on the expensive side most orchids are bright in color and add a lot to a bouquet and they will last up to tens days in a vase.

10. Spider Mums – this is a unique flower that comes in yellow, white and pink and adds style to your bouquet.

11. Sunflowers – this is a bright and cheery flower that makes everyone smile and lasts up to 10 days in a vase.

12. Daisies – another cheery flower on the lower end of the price range – just remember do not buy the dyed daisies as they have a really short life span – because of the dye.

13. Roses – when buying roses look for the freshest cut and the tightest buds this will go a long way in keeping them around for a long time. One other thing to keep in mind with roses is that you need to keep cutting the stem so the flower can draw the water up to help it bloom and look it’s best.
